Striker in waiting |
Long story, so here’s the bullet point version: Driving from Sanibel, FL, back home and decided to break it up into two days. Figuring on leaving at 0-dark hundred, so not looking for anything south of Jacksonville, but by the time we get there, things will be opening up, so... Give me whatever Atlas Obscura-type roadside attractions (or within a reasonable detour) you know along I-95 that I’ve skipped all of my life. Doesn’t have to be time consuming - would be great if they weren’t. We’re talking worlds largest ball of twine type stuff here, but feel free to suggest anything. Leaving Saturday. Thanks in advance. -Rob I predict that there will be many suggestions and statements about the law made here, and some of them will be spectacularly wrong. - jhe888 A=A

Happiness is Vectored Thrust |
I've never been there myself but plan to one day (but I've driven past it on I-95 dozens of times): The Mighty 8th Museum just outside Savannah "Located in Pooler, a suburb of Savannah, The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force aims to preserve the stories of courage, character and patriotism displayed by the men and women of the Eighth Air Force from World War II to the present. At the museum, you’ll hear the unforgettable stories of bravery, experience a bomber mission and briefing, and see the ongoing restoration of the World War II B-17 Flying Fortress. The museum offers large group tours for people of all ages, and tours are often conducted by WWII Veterans." Probably take longer to see that a giant ball of string but I think it'd be well worth the detour and time. Icarus flew too close to the sun, but at least he flew.

If you're into showy fireworks, the area around "South of the Border" in the northern part of South Carolina has a ton of high-end fireworks shops not far off the beaten path.

Thank you Very little |
Fort Frederica National Monument St Simons Island GA. Downtown St Simons, nice area, old Southern charm, nice places to eat downtown.... Amelia Island, get off 95 at 200 and go east, take A1A south, better drive, nice tree lined growth, big ol homes on the water, ocean view, bridge over Nassau Sound on the way through Big Talbot Island Park down to NAS Mayport. Take the St JOhns Ferry across the St JOhns River From there you're in heavier traffic for a bit, you can always head west to 295 back to I95, or continue south toward St Augustine, grab a bite there, see the old town, take a haunted tour, check out the Fort.

Whatever you do, slow the fuck down near Midway Georgia-mile marker 76. I got popped for speeding there in 1993 and it was so expensive I still feel it. That is all. If you like history and architecture I recommend the trolley tour in Savannah. _____________________ Be careful what you tolerate. You are teaching people how to treat you.

I will just lend my voice to all the others recommending Savannah. I miss living there every day and it’s been 17 years now since I left —————————————————— If the meek will inherit the earth, what will happen to us tigers?

I’ll second the 8th AF museum, Saint Simon is a favorite of ours but is not right off the highway.

If you could swing over to the coast... There is the Angel Oak tree... The Angel Oak Tree is estimated to be in excess of 400-500 years old , stands 66.5 ft (20 m) tall, measures 28 ft (8.5 m) in circumference, and produces shade that covers 17,200 square feet (1,600 m2). From tip to tip Its longest branch distance is 187 ft. The Charleston Tea Plantation Farm and Factory tour. Also Brookgreen Gardens a bit further north. Beautiful, with lots of artwork inside and out... with quite a bit of walking to see it all. Collecting dust.

USS North Carolina is in Wilmington NC, south of Jacksonville "Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor.” Robert A. Charleston is indeed nice, and well worth visiting if you don't mind detouring 30-40 miles east. Lots of history, good restaurants - a charming town.

The Ice Cream Man |
So, if you want coffee/appreciate a good pavlova, stopping at Savannah Coffee Roasters is a good idea. If you detour all the way to Charleston, let me know, and I’ll give y’all some tokens for free ice cream.

It’s right at an hour to get to Charleston off of 95, it’s actually a pretty drive on 17. I haven’t been downtown in a while, but lots of restaurants and stores are closed. There was some mild looting of King Street when everything kicked off. Between that and COVID, lots of places haven’t recovered or staying idle till this crap passes. Oh, mandatory to wear a mask too, even outside. $100 fine, no warning either. Can’t wait for this shit to be over with.

Treaty Oak Park has another incredible oak tree in downtown Jax. Not sure where you need to get in NC, but in my several trips that way to work I was fortunate enough to have time to take US 17 from Jax up to the Myrtle Beach area. I actually used to pick it up about the SC line. But it is beautiful. At least it was about 10 years ago, the last time i made the trip for work. 10 years to retirement! Just waiting!
