It is with heavy heart that I say fellow Officer Samuel Jimenez was shot and killed in the line of duty today. He was a new police officer with less than 2 years of service and leaves behind a family, a wife and four children. Please pray for his family, friends and fellow officers.

There are others still fighting for their lives so I ask for a prayer for those victims as well. I will update as info develops.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Elk, the linked article states that the gunmn went there (Hospital) looking for his girlfriend, A doctor. Executed her. Then got into a fire fight with arriving Police, shooting at them as they arrived. Entered into the hospital where a fire fight continued. I am not sure but think the officer killed was shot at that point. Killed a woman, an employee as she got out of the elevator. Gunmen fled in the hospital and was found dead with a head wound.

My family and I are staying up here in Chicago tonight (I have a catheter placement tomorrow and chemo Wednesday at Rush). This was really tough to watch on local news, and we’ve all prayed for the families involved. Frown

Not my words; as I posted last night, but posted on one of our CPD Blogs. Very true and sums it up.

An officer died yesterday. I did not know him, but I've known hundreds, maybe a thousand like him. Clean uniform (mostly), shiny leather gear, insignia all in place, scuffed shoes from all the calls and alleys and stairs and vacant lots.

I was young once, and seldom have I felt so old as I do tonight. I realize how much I've seen, forgotten, tried to forget and failed. Nearly 25 years. Still a rookie to some, a dinosaur to so many others. The Circle of Police Work.

In spite of all that's going on, on how "staying fetal" is the somewhat accepted practice of policing nationwide, this kid, this young and idealistic kid, upheld the finest traditions of police work. He ran to gunfire. He wasn't ambushed like so many of our brethren recently, he ran toward danger. People were in danger and he went where he was supposed to go.......and it killed him.

What do you even say to that? What words can even measure up to that sense of duty, that willingness to sacrifice it all, that feeling that somewhere, someone is in trouble and G_ddamnit, I'm going there to sort it out somehow, even at the cost of everything.

Once again, the pipes will play and the drums will thump, a funeral will be held and the world will be less for the passing of a young Chicago Copper doing his duty.

Yesterday was not a good day.
Rest in peace, brother.

It was one of the most chaotic situations I've been in. One officer dead, another one shot in the holster and embedding in his gun, Dr shot and killed, Pharmacist shot and killed.
Possibly of another gunman, clearing a Hospital full of patients.

Within a few hours, I've witnessed the absolute best officers and few bosses on my department, as well as the other side of that coin.

If you're of the religious type, please pray for all of the people and families involved in this incident.
