This is what happens when you have no 1st amendment protecting your right to free speech. I can't imagine living in a place where you literally cannot state your opinion without worrying about being arrested and jailed.

THE FREE SPEECH SIX

At 11.30am, legal representatives for three government ministers and three News Corp staffers are scheduled to appear before a Victorian court to explain why they should not be prosecuted for contempt.

Here’s a handy backgrounder to this case and the issues involved. Beyond that, legal constraints require I offer nothing further. Those same legal constraints also require that comments not be allowed on this post.

But I will say this.

The case against the ministers and my News Corp colleagues is ******* *********** and the court *** ** **** ******.

That is all.

I am pretty sure the courts rulings and sentencing is responsible for eroding public confidence - nice attempt to pass off the results of your judicial stupidity to others.

The three ministers' comments have appalled judges and magistrates.

Apparently more appalled at comments than the actual terrorists activities in their country.

It was a defense attorney who brought the comments to the attention of the court and filed a complaint stating the ministers were trying to sway the judiciary.

This is typical of an impotent government with far too much authority over the lives of its citizens (subjects?) and not enough safeguards to protect the rights of the people.

We've seen this in Europe - somebody complains about ineffective govt actions, and the govt comes down HARD on them. They can't (or won't) do anything to fight the real problem (terrorists), so in an effort to LOOK like they are doing something, they crack down on people calling the govt out for their weak reaction to terrorism. The emperor doesn't like to be told he's naked.

We've seen hints of this in the US under zippy the wonder turtle. When there was a muslim terror attack, the media would IMMEDIATELY warn against "right-wing extremists" going rogue and attacking muslims, and talk about nothing but "right-wing hate." Their knee-jerk reaction was to make the muslims into the 'real' victims. Some muslim woman would make up a story about being harassed by an eevil white guy wearing a Trump T-shirt, and the media would flock to this "victim's" cause.

It's classic mis-direction.
