In fact one of the TV "news" magazines did an undercover investigation of that very thing, and caught hotel cleaning staff using the very rags with which they'd wiped-down bathroom countertops, etc. to "clean" drinking glasses, after which they'd put on the "sanitized" wrappers. At some pretty high-end establishments, too. But... toilet brushes?!?! That's a new low, even for China. "America is at that awkward stage. I walked back into my office after-hours while the cleaning crew was there to find that one of them had a toilet brush sitting in the bathroom sink. He didn't understand why that was problem. He was dismissed the next day.

Not to gross people out, but a maid in an American hotel cleans toilets and showers in multiple rooms then changes your pillowcase. They also handle all the dirty towels people dump in the shower. It's not like they wash their hands in between.

At least she washed the glasses before cleaning the toilet. I always knew to never use any glassware or washable items in the rooms. I always bring a container of disinfectant wipes and hit all the surfaces I would touch. The wife will not even walk on the carpet without socks or shoes.

That dirty rag used to wipe counters, toilet seats, etc is often used to wipe down the drinking glasses too. It goes room to room to room too. Using the toilet brush on the glasses is a particular kind of nasty but 'm not going to pretend it doesn't happen in the US too.

Sometimes for the toilet, but they usually take one off then grab the front of the second one with their bare hand to remove it. Even in nice hotels I've watched them grab wet towels out of the shower without them, clean the shower, around the floor of the toilet, then go right to making the bed and changing your pillowcase. It's not quite a toilet brush in a glass, but you can't stay in a hotel and be squeamish.

I typically disinfect all the surfaces in the room that I’ll touch with my hands. I use a hand towel from the bathroom soaked with Purell. Light switches, remote control(s), etc. The amount of grime and guck I pick up can be astonishing. The worst was a 5-star Hotel in Delhi, but I’ve seen nearly as bad in high end hotels here in the States.

This behavior is not limited to China. I have a friend who manages a hotel in Orlando. He has seen videos of housekeeping people cleaning glasses and coffee makers with the same towels used to clean toilets. This is why I never use the glasses or coffee makers in hotel rooms unless they are wrapped paper / plastic cups and "single use" coffee makers that make the coffee directly into the disposable cup. I have spent a lot of years doing two to three hundred nights a year in hotels and motels. Anyone that uses the ice bucket or any hotel-provided glass is naive, or an idiot. Not just in China; anywhere, including anywhere in the lower 48, US.

Saw a thing on the news the other day and it seems that Human Feces can be an effective treatment for drug resistant bacterial infections. Perhaps this is the Chinese version of the Feces pill and they are simply looking out for their guests. Nah, I think the Chinese are just too cheap to purchase a proper brush for cleaning glassware. I also have to agree, it's pretty disgusting. I'll also note that I would not relish the thought of taking a Feces pill but I guess if you are sick enough anything that works is worth taking even if it's disgusting. I've stopped counting.

It is called a fecal transplant and is effective in treatment of C diff a particularly nasty infection endemic in nursing homes and hospitals. It is not a pill. Has saved the lives of quite a few people.

I was prepping dinner when the report was on so I wasn't listening to every minute of it, however my memory was that that the were also starting to use it to treat MRSA. Since I've become a bit of a gym rat over the past 2 years that got my attention so I stopped what I was doing and watched the end of the report. In closing they stated that because the factors providing the cure for drug resistant bacteria were actually bacteria from the gut it was believed that the drug resistant bacteria would not ever become resistant to this type of treatment. Of course this was a report on the local evening news so it's a source I wouldn't place a lot of trust in for being accurate however it is interesting that the medical community is now exploring treatments that are fairly "outside the box" and actually discovering new avenues to fighting drug resistant infections. I've stopped counting.

Probably on a trip |
Posting this from the Pudong Shangri-La in Shanghai. The hotel is very nice, 5-stars all the way. But it is always bottled water for me, all the time every time. I never touch glasses in any hotel rooms, stateside included. This and no other is the root from which a tyrant springs; when he first appears above ground he is a protector. Plato

You probably should add Indian food places and Dunkin' Donuts to your list. People from that part of the world aren't big on hygiene.
