Very High Winds. Very Dry Air. Perfect conditions for wildfires.

I was diverted on my way home this afternoon. I could see the smoke 30+ miles away. I heard that it’s about 50% contained. The Air National Guard 106th rescue wing is located right there. They had a few helicopters making drops near the homes. A few may have been lost though. Hopefully the winds lay down this evening.

Glad I went to the range yesterday and not today. lol
Winds calmed down a bit. Haven't heard any current details.

The rescue wing actually had to evacuate as it jumped the road and entered the airport.

Looks like the range burnt, but no idea to what degree. (after just spending a whole lot of time and money on fire repair)

The photos from the air make it looked like it crossed the road at the same spot that burned a few years ago. From the photo I saw (whenever it was taken) the fire's on the other side of the airport from the rescue wing. It is close to where SCPD has their choppers though.

This could be VERY early in the fire though, and burned father south taking out all the business along the road. (If your Amazon stuff it late, that's why. (The the top left big building.))

Just saw some more video, it looks like it did work its way down the road unfortunately.

All day long, they have been reporting that the fire started in Center Moriches and burned its way that way, which is ridiculous if you know how far apart they are and which way the fire was burning.

So now it seems there was a brushfire in Center Moriches and Westhampton Beach on the same day at the same time? What are the odds of that in early March?

All it takes is the right amount of wind and thermal heating and the dry dead grasses will be a very receptive fuel for a escaped pile burn, hot spark from auto issues or hold overs that overwintered in peats ect.

People forget that once the snow is gone that stuff isnt magically still "wet" too and will burn yards ect.

Arson is always a potential of course but by and large most fires spawn from folks lighting stuff off without malace.

We have had more winds and high winds on the East Coast this year. I heard a few fire restrictions here in MD this year and we very really have them.

The LIPSA range at the airport suffered some major damage from the fire.

It's a mess. Lots of stuff burnt up, though I haven't heard yet if the expensive stuff is intact. Frown

The office trailer was just finished being redone after a small fire and big smoke damage due to a lightening strike. Roll Eyes(ETA: Luckily it looks like it was spared)
