I see in my State, only the south west portion will get them. Two broods which get together every 221 years. Imagine that, last time this happened,1803, Thomas Jefferson was President. Maybe the wind will blow some my way. I remember that racket they make calling to their mates. The huge fire red eyes, giant razor sharp teef and steely claws. They fly like a lost bat out of hell. Bang into everything. Late May into early April is when they come up from the ground this year. Are you prepared?

It makes mowing the lawn lots of fun.
They are attracted to the sound of the engine.
The double brood hatch could be very interesting. Had a blast with them (pun intended)

The local wildlife are also excited about the cicada emergence. Local carnivores and omnivores, from birds to moles to snakes to foxes, almost always dine well during cicada season. Because of this, folks often notice an apparent increase in animal populations, especially around the areas where the cicadas are due to appear. Without the ability to read a news bulletin, we can only assume that these predators can hear the cicadas coming to life beneath the Earth’s surface.

I love me some Cicadas…their sound is summer’s anthem to me…much like June bugs on my screened in back porch (I’ll admit that I have tied sewing thread to their legs and let them fly around) …hey I admit I’m Southern born and raised …iffin you don’t know what I’m talking abou…you ain’t from around here

My dad tied thread around them so ww could fly them when we were little. Sweet memory.

I can just picture the chaos with all those loud calls! It's pretty wild how they only come out every couple of centuries. Definitely gotta be ready for anything, especially if they're not the best at navigating while flying.

For less than $20 Walmart has a decent tennis racket. Its quality is quite good for swatting cicadas, carpenter bees, and green June beetles. It will also mince a wasp quite nicely.

Good protein.

I did commercial lawn maintenance in the summers back in the late 90s. I squished countless ones under my shirt one year. I think they liked the weedeater more than the mower.

It's not that they only emerge every two centuries-it's the convergence of different broods:

For the first time since 2015 a 13-year brood will emerge in the same year as a 17-year brood.

For the first time since 1998 adjacent 13-and 17-year broods will emerge in the same year.

For the first time since 1803 Brood XIX and XIII will co-emerge.

Maybe you folks with the air fryers can try them out on cicadas.

I have tried putting a fish hook down their abdomen and trying to catch trout and smallmouth bass, not even a bite. I think they scare the fish.

This technique works great with grasshoppers

Would have to agree. Raised in TN and GA. We don't get them nearly as much in NM.

Dang Blackhawk, you guys are sadistic little "Bastids"! (In my growing up neighborhood, we practiced recycling - we rested our june bug toys on the screen door between flights and also let them feed on sap from the scrub-oak trees to refuel them.)
