I finally got my Cobra quote from my former employers insurance. 380 dollars per week. yikes! Went to Obamacare website, filled out the info, and I guess mistakenly put my phone number in. Got 20 calls in 30 minutes. Only talked to one guy, was nice at first, then went into full car salesman mode. Buy right now or if you call me tomorrow it will be an extra 80 dollars. When I told him he's the first person I talked to and I'm not buying anything right this minute, he hung up on me. At least 50 calls in the last day and a half. Is there any way to get quotes without having to talk to an asshole? I'm 61 and plan to get another job in the next few months. Wanted to get something in case something catostrophic happened like a heart attack.

They used to have online applications. They had LOTS of problems in the beginning, but should be better now. If you have trouble call your Congressional Rep. They will know. Hope this helps Try this: https://www.healthcare.gov/app...l/get-help-applying/

Hard to avoid talking to a pushy asshole when it come to unsolicited calls from insurance salesmen. There are exceptions of course. I’m pretty sure you went to a .com or .net website that was designed to look like the actual feds website. Those domains were purchased by marketing companies who then sell the information you put in their website to insurance brokers. That’s why you’re getting lambasted with telephone calls. The actual website for Obamacare is www.healthcare.gov.

Since you plan another job and new coverage you may be able to "float" your Cobra coverage. Do your own research but I think you can delay enrollment something like 90days retroactively. So theoretically you wait without taking it, if you have a large medical event you enroll within the 90 days. It picks up retroactively to day one. It's a quirk of Cobra coverage. For good coverage the wife and I pay more than the $380 you mentioned. I'm 62 and retired for reference.

^^^ Be careful if you go this route to watch the deadlines. The cobra guidelines are: 1) Your former employer has up to the latter of, 14 days from the last day of coverage, or, your date of termination, to notify you of your rights under cobra. 2) you then have up to 60 days to decide if you’re going to take cobra. 3) if you decide to take cobra you then have up to 45 days to pay all retroactive premium due. Most employers will deactivate your coverage once you’ve been terminated. Hence although you can try the float when you try to use your ID card it will show as terminated. Most providers won’t see you without valid insurance coverage, that is, unless you can afford to pay cash for the visit. All the above assumes your employer is considered a large employer under COBRA guidelines. Translated, that means your employer has over 20 employees. State continuation coverage will apply to businesses with less than 20 employees and the rules can be entirely different than what I outlined above

No More Mr. Nice Guy |
Look into Christian Healthcare Ministries. There are some other similar groups but my wife and I chose CHM. We pay $450 per month for the full coverage. I am 61 and retired at the end of last year. Cobra was the same cost as Obamacare for us, something like $1200/month. Obamacare costs are based on taxable income, and here in Utah is no bargain. CHMinistries is not legally insurance but it amounts to the same thing effectively. You self-pay and then get reimbursed. Providers may give a decent cash discount since they don't file insurance paperwork. There are restrictions on pre-existing conditions, with no coverage if there have been symptoms in the last 3 yrs iirc. After 2 yrs on CHM it becomes covered again. There is a possibility of coverage for those pre-existing conditions but not guaranteed. There is a maximum $500 deductible for each event. Their website explains how it works. If you do have significant pre-existing conditions, Cobra is your best bet because it covers them. Anything else, including Obamacare, probably won't cover it.
