Yesterday, we started a cruise from Boston that has 2 stops in Maine and 3 in Canada. Our first stop today was Portland Maine. I haven't been to Portland in over 10 years. We walked into town with our twin grandkids and my son and daughter in law.
As soon as we got into town multiple people asked for money, not good. As we were on the sidewalk, with 2 strollers a local woman with (my guess) a 4 year old girl, right out she screams get the f**k out of my way. Then tells us to go back to the state we come from. WTF?
I live in a tourist town that is mobbed during the summer (Beach town). I don't particularly like all the city people crowding the roads but they do bring in a lot of summer jobs.
I like Maine, people are nice for the most part. I don't think next time I'll visit Portland.
Tomorrow Eastport Maine.

We’re planning on visiting Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine in late October. I’ve heard that Portland had gotten pretty woke, and had a lot of homeless people, especially for its size. Maybe we’ll just pass by and spend more time in other towns.

Portland is good for its dining scene, lots of good places to get a bite...unfortunately, it's also is a magnet for the state's odd-balls weirdos and mentally ill. Try to avoid and not let them ruin your trip.

That's the way to do it. I spent a great week in Maine for vacation back in June, and the only time I spent in Portland was flying in and flying out. The rest was spent on the coast around the Blue Hill Peninsula/Eggemoggin Reach area.

You were about an hour from me.

The Dems in Portland have pretty much turned a beautiful, enjoyable city into a disaster. I live an hour away and used to regularily go there generally to eat, but now I refuse to go for anything other than a compelled trip. If your itenerary has you near there lots of us can give you options for almost anything that is not in the city and will be way more enjoyable. On a cruise ship you really have no choice, I get that.
