BytesDid I Mention My Genius Idiot Son?
Stefan and his girlfriend Cassie take off on a big trip to South America to celebrate her graduation in chemical engineering. OK, cool, I'm not on board with it, but they're both grown up. They plan on visiting Columbia, Peru, Argentina, and Brazil... Rio. The Rio thing didn't give me warm fuzzies. They get back OK and the wife and I are grateful as hell to have our son and daughter in law back.
Then last night they tell us about their story of going up to the "Christ the Redeemer" statue. That's cool, fine go nuts. On their way back they decided to take a detour that was only four clicks out of their way. Oooooooooookay, I'm not so cool with this. Long story short they got caught in the DARK jungle and only had their cell phone flash lights. Both phones died and they spent a night in the jungle on their own.
They somehow managed to survive it, listening to all the wildlife all night long. When they negotiated their way back to a roadway and Stef noticed that he couldn't find his wallet. Way back in the jungle. Cassie only had enough money to get them halfway to the hotel via taxi. They felt safer in the jungle at night than they did hiking through Rio

Weird, he doesn't feel so invincible now

Thanks to the whatever higher power got Stef and Cassie home safe.

ewillsSounds like a needed learning experience. A lot of folks need something like that to wake up a bit.
Glad they got home safe.....

No kidding. That had to be terrifying. Not sure if it was the jungle or the bad areas of Rio or both.
Mom and I can now sleep nice. We don't want anymore stories.

SteynI was born in Brazil, and my daughters will only visit that POS pathetic excuse for a country when I keel over (and, if they do, they are out of my will).

That is what scared the hell out of me. I REALLY wish that Stef could have talked to you. Mom and I thought that was the worst idea ever. Getting past that debacle is a miracle in my eyes,

At least they didn't get measles as the Venezuelans are causing a pandemic in Brazil!

kkinaThere was a major power failure in downtown SF about a decade ago, and stranded BART passengers had to pick their way out of a pitch black tunnel. Most had only the illumination from their phone displays.

Doc H.We did a hospital inspection once on a hospital in Panama that backed up - literally - to the jungle. The Tarzan jungle, night noises and all. Civilization in the front, Predator movie set in the back. Late one night the team went to clean up some paperwork, and our administrator somehow got left behind. He showed up after the doors were locked, so went around back - through the jungle - and tossed rocks up to the window until we opened the door. We told the hospital's administrator the following morning as a funny travel tale, and how our guy was a maroon, and all the color left his face and we thought he was going to pass out. He said, real quiet and shaky, "don't ever do that again." Fer-de-lance bite and palm viper bite treated just the previous week. Never get out of the boat Chief.

Well, if you think about the darkness and things like that, fucking in the jungle was probably a very poor choice

GustoferOh to be young and adventurous again. In my early 20s I'd have been all over that.

I'm with you on that. I think I'm turning into the parents that took very good care of me that I swore I wouldn't become. At any rate, Stef and his GF are home safe and sound and that's all I care about. I did really stupid stuff with rattle snakes and canyons and explosives and etc... southwestern Idaho when I was growing up. Really stupid stuff that my deceased mother and father would have rocked my life if the knew what the hell I was doing.

Oz_ShadowFunny how things seem fine at 20 but really stupid at 40. I'd be terrible at being young now.

old rugged cross"Son's girl friend."? Ie: "daughter in-law"? Is this you or your wife's logic?"
Just curious.
And yes the whole thing was stupid.
Glad they survived and were unharmed.

comet24Well, they have a great story and maybe learned from it. Maybe not I remember being that age. I would have thought that was a good adventure.
