I completely agree with you on this... but in the original post, he said his son has never played guitar or taken a lesson. I think you really need at least some playing experience before you can figure out what you like.

Even with no experience, people definitely do have aesthetic preferences, and having a guitar you think looks cool can be helpful with keeping up with practice when you're a beginner.
