It seemed a bit early to pigeon hole the Ukraine War as a "Global War" in that thread and the "Is that Idiot Biden going to get us in a war with Russia or China?" thread covers all sorts of conjecture and opinions.

I felt that a war in Europe with a nation that we agreed to protect and guard it's sovereignty in 1994 under the The Budapest Agreement in exchange for it surrendering its nuclear weapons, effectively outsourcing its defense from Russia to the West, a nation that is the 4th largest grain producer in the world, has significant mineral deposits including oil and natural gas, nickel, iron ore, coal, manganese, graphite, titanium, magnesium, and mercury among others, has strategic ports that are used by Russia to project naval power into the world, a nation that has two major rivers, the Dnieper and the Danube, that lead from Russia to the front doors of our NATO allies in Europe, a nation that is our ally and took KIAs in Afghanistan in service to a U.S. cause...

...well, I thought it was important enough to have a thread dedicated to the specific war that has now started.

I'm sure Para will be along shortly to decide whether this thread has any merit.

A separate thread is deserved b/c Biden and the DNC Commies want a war to distract from their failures. Anyone who wants to keep this subject in the existing Biden thread Congrats, as you're enabling them to do just that.

Hopefully everyone understands that simple truth and posts on Ukraine here. It's ultimately up to the Boss, of course.

I would tend to agree with MDS that political threads and world war postulation threads are too muddy for something as important and discrete as what is being inflicted upon the Ukraine. And MDS's defense of the thread post above is one of the clearest summations I've seen on what has been done, and what we have failed to do. I would be appreciative if this could be a place where we could share updates and insights on this unfolding tragedy.

The beliefs that a war like this won’t have significant effects on us here in the US and that it was somehow orchestrated by the Democrats in this country are literally astonishing. I believe that a separate thread to discuss the war is warranted (and I personally welcome it). But based on my own previous attempts to start discussions that focus on a single important topic all I can say is good luck with that. A small number of people will inevitably seek attention by posting unrelated comments to express their fantastic views and sooner or later the discussion will degenerate into a turd pile.

I prefer a separate thread. The “global war” thread has become unorganized? to me. Not sure the correct word I am looking for, but it’s not specific to Russia/Ukraine.

The Biden thread is one I rarely enter. More that I wish for.

This forum is my news source. My one and only. Threads like this are great as I can follow the FACTS, and not have to read about Biden’s daily fuckups or China this and that.

Thanks for posting. This is one I’ll be following if it stays open.

I posted the initial reports in the "biden" thread because we had been discussing Ukraine there.

Putin fully recognizes how weak and befuddled biden is.

but I do agree that an important event like this deserves it's own thread.

The Maiden Revolution orchestrated and supported by the democrats, putting NATO at Russias door step. Cornering Putin when Russia has valid security concerns as NATO expands around it.

I see an active pattern and the results aren't surprising.

I didn't think Putin would do it...the fucking west just had to keep poking the fucking bear...they poked until Putin finally said "fuck it...what do I have to lose"

at 2200 last night my inlaws started hearing blasts....they were rocking their windows. They live on the eastern side of Kharkiv near the outer ring road.

They have moved to the western side near ther train station on the road to Polotava, the Russian took out C&C last night and have landed Paratroops at the airport, there have been some ground combat with either dropped BMPs or armored units from Belegorod.

They are now in the metro as it is reported they will be receiving MLRS/Grad fire....

Russians has been very surgical so far....my prayer is that they keep being so

If you are someone who prays I would appreciate a couple words said for my family in Kharkov...along with the rest of the innocents there

I for one don’t believe for a second that “poking the bear” was why Putin is attacking the Ukraine. Reunification was his goal all along, and has been from the start. If you think back, the Russians annexed the Crimea with no poking. They didn’t ask the region to join them in any kind of real diplomatic process. They simply took. They aim to do so with the entire country. At most, outside influences may have sped up the timetable but Russia was planning this the whole time. The parallels to Hitler doing the same thing in Czechoslovakia in the Sudetenland annexation can’t be ignored. And the world watched it happen without doing anything. Then and now, using the excuse that it was what the people wanted is a flimsy pretext to taking control of the entire nation eventually.

The policies and actions of the other European powers and the US helped lead Hitler to believe that he could accomplish his goals by active warfare. To a lesser degree the same is true of Putin’s belief today. Encouraging beliefs about goals, however, is not the same as establishing those goals in the first place or even of making the final decision to pursue them that way. Neville Chamberlain was not in a Panzer II when they crossed the Polish border. Such thinking is no different than blaming the rape victim for her “provocative” clothes or the bank for being robbed because it has a lot of money on hand.

Yep. Putin saw an opportunity (based on Biden's weakness) ... and he took it.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."
