I stopped at a little diner near my house at lunch today and I saw an elderly man sitting at a nearby table with a woman that I assumed to be his daughter . He was wearing one of those WWII Veteran ballcaps . When my server came to my table I told her to bring me their check and just tell him it's been taken care of . That's all they needed to know . I heard the woman tell the server " Well , tell them thank you whoever it was " . As I was walking out I passed another couple coming in and the old fellow had a WWII cap on as well . I wish the timing had been right . It would have been an honor to buy his lunch as well . That opportunity is fast disappearing . My own father who was a vet would have been 92 this year . If you are ever in the presence of one of these guys , cherish that opportunity .

Hats off to you sir. My grandpa just turned 94 this past February. He's still pretty sharp telling me stories of the war. Cherish the opportunity for sure. There will be a day when all our heroes of WWII will be gone but not forgotten. The greatest generation.

My college room mate's father-in-law earned the Bronze Star during the Italian campaign. I met him twice, once at the wedding (I was their Best Man), and a second time a few years back when they were all returning from a short trip to Southern Illinois.

He was wearing a cap that announced his accomplishment. I said, "Bronze Star, eh?" and he just nodded and smiled at me. I didn't press for details.

He has been suffering with Alzheimer's for several years now, doesn't recognize anybody anymore, and is very angry about his situation.

I tear up every time I think about how much he is suffering.

Yes, we are sadly losing our WW2 warriors much too quickly.

My step dad was one such. He had a number of "awards" from his WW2 trip to Europe. Almost never talked about it, and then only between the 2 of us.

I hardly knew my father enough to talk about his WWII service, he was in Alaska, however I have several photos of him stationed there.

My step-father, was in Leyte, and I was lucky, that he would often talk about his service there, and his deployment to the Philippines.

He told me about sailing on one of the "Kaiser" built troop ships from the West Coast.

When I die, all of those stories will be gone, as my son has no interest , even if I told him. Sad.

All the local WWII veterans in my community are gone.

My Dad is a WWII Navy vet, he is 95. He often wears a cap with his ship's name and has had his meal paid for a time or two. God bless anyone who will go out of their way to thank a WWII hero in any way.
