HRKNeed a Tool to run a windows pc remotely
Need to implement the ability to take over my dads windows laptop remotely from time to time.
Looked into Windows remote app but it states it needs the PC you are connecting to be running Win 11 Pro, which his laptop is running the home version and we do not need to upgrade it to Pro.
What applications are out there to run a remote desktop of another windows machine that I could buy/load onto our computers without a big security hole for them, and would allow me to take over and show him or run for him/setup things. It's gotten to the point that doing this over the phone is frustrating for both.

smschulzSince the remote pc is home, you can't use the built-in RDP.
You will need a web based protocol such as splashtop.com or TeamViewer.
I use Splashtop for my IT clients as it is much cheaper than TeamViewer.
There are others as well.

HRKThanks looking for something that isn't a recurring fee based service, it's not something I need monthly, maybe a couple of times a year.

xantomI am not sure what the current state of the free TeamViewer version is but that used to work well for me a while ago. Another option might be Chrome Remote Desktop.

SigSauerFanTeamViewer is free for personal use.
Have been using it to help family for years.
Have not researched if there is anything better, etc.

TeamViewer
I'll give it a look, will bring his laptop home over Easter and see if I can get it to work, since I'll need to be on both PC's to do the install and verification of activation and execute the program...

bukerhammerI to like TeamViewer. It is free for personal use. I have used it the past 4 or 5 years for family and it works great.

0-0Been using TeamViewer for ages now. No issues, even running on older hardware and W7.
When TV kicked me out a few times suspecting iwas using it for commercial purposes i explained to them that the target machine was at my (empty) parents place and the controller was always one of my personal computers and or cell phone. Provided the TV clients ID for all of them.
Had no issues since. Worst can happet is you get disconnected and offered to putchase a commercial license.
I have the client installed in all my computers.

mark123When I worked as a programmer, I used Netgear ProSAFE VPN to access remote servers and client computers. It was rather simple to set up and use. It was, however, more involved than installing an app.

stoic-oneTeam Viewer, or if you don't mind a little setup, VNC Viewer.

smschulzLike I said earlier I use Splashtop for my client support but TeamViewer does work very well.
The only thing is that if you are using it
allegedly
too much they will eff up your efforts.
I just couldn't pay their rate and Splashtop was more affordable to me.
But TeamViewer may be the best performer other than port-forwarding-RDP.

Shouldn't be much trouble to find one, the profession is full of them! Is there a Starbuck's near your dad's place? Good place to start looking. Focus on the dude with the most pimples.
