Yea I am a Bourbon drinker also. One of my favorites is Blantons. It is hard to find around here but I do have some left. I only drink it on rare occasions. I have been drinking Elijah Craig and Angels Envy lately. To her even some of the expensive ones taste like gasoline. She does like the Angels Envy finished in port wine barrels. Living in Ireland I obviously drink mostly Irish Whiskey or Single malt Scotch. I had the occasional JD or Jim Beam over the years and liked them well enough at the time. I'm currently rereading all the C J Box Joe Pickett books and there are a good few references to Makers Mark being a premium Bourbon so I got a bottle to try. I'm very underwhelmed! As far as I'm concerned, you are missing nothing. stick to the Redbreast, I do. Then again, the smell of bourbon still induces a small retch for me - related to a misadventure with Wild Turkey 101 35 years ago. NRA Life Member - "Fear God and Dreadnaught"

I had a similar experience with Irish Mist about 40 years ago. .................................................. I am very fond of Elijah Craig, not so much with Angel's Envy.

Never took to bourbon or rye for that matter. Could be that as a pre-teen the sample I stole from my father's liquor cabinet put me off for life. Who knows. I would sample some every few years but still found it, while not like gasoline like our friend's wife above, not at all pleasing. For decades I enjoyed single malt scotch, primarily speysides but dabbled with others. Then I had a heart attack and went cold turkey quitting cigars and pipes which changed my taste buds. I found, after this, that Irish pleased my palette more than any other type of whisk(e)y. That was 15 years ago and I haven't looked back. It seemed like a good idea... |
Not sure on a specific Irish whiskey to recommend, but since you are in the trying mood... Give some of the Japanese whiskeys a chance. I have been pleasantly surprised. Very good. Nikka Coffey Grain is a very nice one. Suntory Toki for the cheaper end of the spectrum. -Jay "Assault is a type of behavior, not a type of hardware." -Alan Korwin

Just had a shot of Jameson Black Barrel and highly recommend. I'm not a big Irish whiskey fan, but this is quite good. I'm gonna vote for the funniest frog with the loudest croak on the highest log.
