Sailor1911Local LEO dispatches "suspected intruder"
Three AM this morning, "suspected intruder" picks the wrong house to intrude upon. City of Wichita PD officer lives there with his wife and kids. According to the Chief, the intruder had a weapon and a "gun fight" ensued. LEO shot in the leg, hospitalized and recovering. "Suspected Intruder" shot multiple times, transported to the hospital critical where the 24 year old young man later died.
Chief says, our officers training in identifying a threat and reacting quickly and appropriately saved lives (I paraphrase).

arfmelThe only way I would consider leaving a door unlocked at night is if I had 2 or 3 big dogs that enjoyed miscreant meat.

Yeah. Chief said in his afternoon brief that they "thought" they accidentally left a door unlocked.
And, BTW, the neighborhood where this occurred is not a bad area at all.

I hope they're giving their officers more training than that because that's pretty much just self-preservation 101 right there. Stranger in your house at 0300? Threat identified. Reacting quickly? Shoot the mother-fucker. Saved lives? All but his.
Glad to hear the homeowner and his family are good to go.

If I were a criminal, I wouldn't be prowling around the 'hood to break into houses. Criminals want soft targets and "nice" neighborhoods are softer targets, IMO. People leave their doors unlocked because it's "safe" and they also seem to be less aware. And they likely have more valuable stuff to steal.

Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here.
Although sometimes distracting, there is often a certain entertainment value to this easy standard.

Agreed. No good reason to leave doors unlocked, especially at night.

ensigmaticI've lived in "good" neighborhoods my entire life. The doors have been locked at night or when we left the house for as long as I remember.
I cannot imagine why one would do otherwise.

captain127I have woken up a few times to find I forgot to lock the back door. I do feel the loud bark from my 80 pound lap dog would be both a good alert for me and would make the intruder think twice though
