Getting a cat, could use some advice Login/Join

Hey guys, my cat passed in September and I decided to get another one. I am throwing away the old litter boxes but what do I do with the climbing trees? I have several and would hate to trash them.

I will either place the old play toys in an out of way place or throw them away as well, depending on what you guys say. Everything that can be washed will be.

I may come home with two if the one I am getting has a buddy at the adoption center. I do eventually want 2 so they can keep each other company while I am at work.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Am I missing something here??? Why not just use the cat trees you already have??? Those things are awesome.

I read something online about the new cat may feel uncomfortable smelling the old cat around the house. I am driving 200+ miles to pick up the new feline overlord and want him to be comfortable as he has had a bit of stress lately with being in an animal shelter, then a pet rescue to recover from an upper respiratory infection before I get him.

Thinking of getting the Feliway spray to treat the cat carrier before driving back.

He is a big one. Going to get a medium size dog carrier to bring him home in.

I wouldn't worry about it. Keep the old stuff. Cats are freaking weird anyways, but they always adapt to love.

Yeah, cats pretty much want their own. If they get on a cat tree that smells like another cat, they seem to have some notion at the backs of their heads that they're going to have to fight the other cat for the cat tree sooner or later.

I could see buying a new litter box (you definitely want them using it as cat pee smells horrible), but I'd reuse climbing trees and scratching posts. I'd throw cat toys in the washing machine and whatever survives I'd reuse.

My thought is your new cat will lounge on your existing sofas, chairs, beds, etc. even though your old cat's scent may be there, and pretty sure they'll view climbing trees and scratching posts similarly. Probably find them rubbing the scent glands in their cheeks on it to put their scent on it. If they don't use it then it's their loss and zero loss to you (unlike a cat refusing to use a litter box).

Keep the old climbing tree. Toss it only if the new cats seem to be avoiding it.

Keep the tree, and grab one of the new kitteh's adoption agencies' brother's or sister's so they can keep each other company when you are out of the house!.

The first few days or so will be nervous while (s)he gets used to new surroundings, new smells, new sounds.

I don’t think it is necessary to get all new toys, climbs, etc.

Realize that cats come in a variety of personalities, secure, insecure, bold, timid, aggressive, passive, so some observation is necessary to be sure what combo this one may be.

At present, we have 14 of them, 7 of which are siblings, all different.

The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

On our third cat in about forty years and we've tried to remove reminders of the previous ones as best we can each time. I have no idea if that's important but a "clean slate" for all involved can't hurt. FWIW IMO if you've lost a cat and want another, the sooner the better, grieving time factored in.

There is cat smell all over your house. Haven't you ever seen the cat rub its jowl on the door frame, chair leg, or other corner? Vacuum what you can, wash what you can, and then let the new cat(s) settle in. They may even find comfort in knowing that another cat had been there. They will be uneasy for awhile as they explore the new digs. Maybe sprinkle some catnip on the trees and other places. Watch for odd or unwanted behavior.

Thanks for the advice guys and if he has a buddy then I will bring both of them home. He is still getting over an upper respiratory infection at the caretaker's house but he is doing much better.

Congrats, and thank you for adopting a cat in need.

Before tossing the trees, I'd try cleaning them, as suggested above. Also, you could keep them away from the cat initially, and rub his face with cloth to get his scent on it, then rub it on the trees. Do that a bunch of times so the trees really smell like him before he's introduced to them.

Good on you getting a new one. Kittens won’t care about the scent on the tree but a mature cat may take exception

Don't get rid of anything unless it becomes apparent that the new cat(s) don't like it. And give things a couple of weeks before even that.

I'm with Flashguy! We adopted three rescues within about a year, and they were all cool with the cat trees and litter pans, which I didn't even give a thorough scrubbing after our last one died several months before we began rescuing.

In our case, the first two came from a rough hoarding situation, so being just the two of them was a treat from heaven for them. The third was an only child of a couple that couldn't take it with them on a move. None of them saw ghosts.

Some cats are picky when it comes to certain things.
My childhood cat would hiss at us when we come back after petting the neighbors dog.

Our current cat couldn't care less about other animal's smells. I regularly come home after petting dogs and other cats, and she doesn't even seem curious or suspicious.

I even took home some cat items that my sister's cats didn't like, and she doesn't really be bothered at all.

It all depends on the individual cat.
