Magnesium and zinc (both elements needed by the body) are not present in the soil as much now as had been the case 100 years ago. They typically are not one of the ingredients of fertilizers and so over time the levels decrease. I have a tiny brain aneurysm, too small for the doctor's to want to do surgery, but I get my brain scanned every year to see if it is changing. My brain specialist has me taking 200mg of Magnesium Citrate twice a day. They had me start with 1 a day because of the laxative effect & then two, every other day, & now two every day. My boss's daughter takes magnesium for migraines & it helps her tremendously. | |||

I eat a large can of spinach every day and find that I’m now strong as an ox. As a side note, I find that I’m now the object of desire of an uncomfortably tall anemic gal with poor posture, and this other burly fellow that wants to fight all the time. My thoughts exactly. Stay away from processed junk and eat natural real food as much as possible. Get some exercise. Drink mostly water. For most people, thise simple things will make a world of difference. | |||

I have been told that there is a big difference between magnesium oxide (which I take) and magnesium citrate. Ore than that, I don’t know. | |||

Interesting and timely thread. I have Afib. The monitor I wore for a few weeks said it occurs 8% of the time. Yesterday during a check up with my cardiologist, he asked if I take any magnesium supplements. The vitamin supplement I am taking contained 18% magnesium. He suggested I might want to consider a stronger dose. The conversation moved on and I thought nothing of it. Now with this thread, I think I'll try that idea starting off with maybe 50mg. and seeing if there is any improvement in my condition. Awake not woke | |||

I need to start taking Magnesium for leg cramps and the regularity would be a plus. I would prefer a tablet instead of a drink. What brand/dosage would you suggest? p.s. I assume we are all adults on here, and it cracks me up that some prefer gummies. | |||

As I noted in the OP of this thread, I too take Mg tablets to prevent nighttime foot and leg cramps. I buy the RiteAid brand. “Magnesium Oxide and Magnesium Gluconate” Serious about crackers. | |||

This has been an interesting discussion. I have muscle pain in my left leg while riding in my wife's SUV. It has been getting worse and now occasionally while driving my PU. The discussion about less magnesium in the soil triggered a thought about supplements we give our horses due to potential deficiencies in hay and pasture. I started a magnesium tablet, 1/2 250mg., and so far some improvement. After a while I will see if I need to go to a full tablet. Thanks to the OP and everyone else for their experiences! Jim | |||

Please note--I didn't ask. I take a 250mg Magnesium Oxide tablet every night. No side effects (other than no cramps) noted. Doctors approve. I also take 50mg Zinc every day. My USAF doctor told me that every man over 40 years old should take a Zinc supplement, and I've done so ever since. An unexpected (but welcome) side effect is a notable decrease in body odor. Since both Magnesium and Zinc supplements are water soluble, overdosing in either is very rare (excesses are excreted). flashguy Texan by choice, not accident of birth | |||

I get/got some awful cramps during the night. Legs, calves and the dreaded one in my "groan muscle," which really, really hurts. My doc prescribes 400mg of Magnesium Oxide, once per day. The cramps have really subsided-not completely quit-but really subsided. I've been taking the dosage for about 3 years. I've been thinking of a dose of zinc, too, though not for cramps. Bob | |||

Thank you for sharing that. Yesterday I worked out hard. As I lay down, totally conked out for a mid day nap, I noticed my heart had a slight ache and I got a leg cramp. Got up, did teaspoon of calm disolved in hot water and when I layed down noticed that my heart pain was gone. I have that pop up occasionally, had it looked at by Dr's and tested extensively. I am would they term "excellent condition". However, that's the first time I had noticed feeling better after taking Calm. I've taken it on and off for @ 10 years as when I work hard, I'll drop up to 5-6 lbs in a day of water weight and will get middle of the night leg cramps if I don't preemptively take it. | |||

Upon the advice here, I started taking 250 mg of magnesium 2 nights ago. I slept a full 8 hours for the first time in a long time both nights. I also had a number of trips to the can yesterday but no issues today. I hope this isn’t temporary. Thanks for the tip. This is the one I take as well and it's been great. It helps me sleep, it helps me recover from workouts, and no gastric distress issues thanks to it's high absorption.
