Retiring next month. Smile
I currently reside in Maryland and am looking to escape to a free state.
Have to remain semi close because of wife's kids/grandkids in the area.
PA is out, too far, so thinking about WVA just across the river, would like to stay within about an hour of the Mt. Airy MD area.
What's it like over there?
Thanks,
Dan

It’s not that close but Tennessee is a great state. Can carry in or out. Castle law, no wait, all mags, background check only, cost $10. no state income tax. My favorite part average 2 or so inches of snow per year. Lots of fishing, hunting, smokie mts.

I've been to Harper's Ferry several times for work.

The locals definitely know who the outsiders are and you are treated as such sometimes.

You're about an hour to DC. Lots of history around. Lots of small towns with excellent restaurants. I definitely got the feeling that the area is a culinary wonderland, but this is coming from someone that's lived in Montana for the past 9 years(my choices are limited here). Breweries/wineries/distilleries within driving distance.

There is a good sized hotel/casino there and they have a horse track. So there are some 2nd tier performers that come through the area.

ETA: I see you actually aren't far from that area already. You should check out Schmankerl Stube in Hagerstown, MD. It's a traditional German food restaurant. The Jägerschnitzel and Spätle is delicious!

I’m in Martinsburg. Love WV. The stigma of WV being loaded with yokels is an underserved stereotype, at least in the eastern panhandle.

Open carry good, Constitutional concealed carry, even better.

Everyone I know in the Republik of MD envies me and my ability to not only buy Hi-cap mags and “restricted” weapons, but to walk out with them within 15 minutes.

They really like how I can walk out in Md the same day with any long gun the same way thanks to reciprocity.

Lower taxes are a plus also. Honestly, I can’t think of any reason not to make the jump.

P226RN made the same move a year or two ago. I'm sure she can provide some insight. Area is nice, but has grown a lot in the last 20 years as people move further and further out for cheaper housing. It's now a suburb of DC, yep that's right people commute regularly from WVA to DC.

My friend and I went through Harpers Ferry, WV about a month ago. Nice town...

The only problem is the National Park Service took over a large section of the city and there is not much parking available.

Seems like it would get on your nerves if you were a local.

Western Loudon County, VA is nice...

Yes indeed. And what a great move it was. PM if you like and we can talk details...

If it won't matter in 5 years don't give it more than 5 minutes.

If staying within striking distance of Mt. Airy MD is a concern, there are several other options. Harpers Ferry is beautiful. I've passed through there many times on trips from Gaithersburg to Winchester. There are two other Potomac crossings (besides the Beltway) that give easy access from NOVA to Montgomery County. US 340 to Frederick and I70 (from Harpers Ferry) is obviously the quickest to Mt. Airy. But you can also cross at Point of Rocks, which dumps you into Dickerson in upper MontCo. Also, White's Ferry near Leesburg is a very peaceful and historic crossing that also unloads directly into MontCo. The ferry itself is name the General Jubal Early, who was, ASFAIK, the only Confederate general who refused to surrender after the Civil War.

Never been there, but I've heard Capon Bridge WV is a nice small town, and not very far from Harpers Ferry. But you cannot beat Harpers Ferry for sheer beauty.

Going to West Virginia instead of Virginia is a wise move.Every year Virginia moves farther left.It will eventually be as miserable as Maryland.

My son and his family have moved into my house while their new house is currently being built near Harpers Ferry. I might be joining them in the next few years. Quicker if Ben Jealous becomes Governor of MD.

PA too far? I can get to Mt Airy in less than 45 mins from the border and there are some cute towns that hug it in my home state. PA could use some more free-folk thinking given the liberal infiltrators from NY & Jersey of late.

I live in the Frederick area. I’m very jealous of your move. Wife told me we are moving back to Florida in two years so there is that.

I actually could stomach this place until O’Malley fucked up the mag law.
