I'm doing some light video work so I fired up the old iMac. It's a core 2 duo, late 2009 with RAM maxed at 16GB. A two minute trial video clip was marked at near 11 hours to export and we all know it's always longer. And that's just to get the clip from the camera into the editor library. I have a windows laptop here with an i3 and 16GB RAM in it that performs much better that will work until I can get a desktop. I'm definitely looking at budget boxes so what's a decent suggestion? I've realized that I have a difficult time navigator windows. I don't even know where the control panels are anymore. However, a Mac is probably not going to be it this time unless it's used/refurbished.

Oops, I was mistaken. The laptop is an i5. I have a couple of older unused computers that I can stick a new motherboard and processor into. That may save me a few bucks. Maybe.

Hi mark, I STRONGLY suggest you try the Service Configurations for your Windows OS. Usually, I go for the "Tweaked" column suggested settings. Been doing it since they first appeared, almost 20 years ago. Old hardware is my game. http://www.blackviper.com/service-configurations/ If you want to play it in the safe side, just do 6 or more changes, reboot and use your computer that way for a few days. Next do the following set until you complete all the changes. HUGE difference. HUGE! 0-0 "OP is a troll" - Flashlightboy, 12/18/20

Refurbished 2018 Macminis (with 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports) are now showing up on the Apple store. $1,000 -> $1,100. You can upgrade the RAM yourself. Don't know what your budget is. You would have to provide your own monitor. The Mini makes is a fine desktop machine. I've been using Minis for years. Link. When in doubt, mumble

I'd like to keep the budget to about half that.

Go ahead punk, make my day |
Yeah a ten year old Mac, or any computer for that point, is going to choke on extensive video rendering. For $500, I don't think there is much out there. Then again I don't see much point to buying a cheap computer that will be obsolete in a year or two (working on a 5 year old MBP that cost $1700).

Have you looked around on Newegg to source replacement parts? My machine I originally built in 2005! The chassis (tower) is the same, but at times I've swapped out single pieces. Around 2012 or so I got a new mother board and CPU. In 2016 or so I replace the power supply. Last year when my kids started playing Minecraft I upgraded the RAM and video card. I would look at replacing the CPU with a 1 or 2 year old i7 and a new mother board. Additional RAM if needed. My kids and I need to share the machine so I may build another one this winter. I am struggling between building a new one and getting a laptop. The free standing units seem to have a much longer life if you're willing to swap out parts as needed. Its a lot more difficult swap out individual parts on a laptop. ETA: Oh, I see your Windoze machine is a laptop, not a tower. That kind of screws up my post...and shows the quandary I am facing with getting a laptop (inability to swap parts).

Does this get rid of all the bloatware? I was actually looking for something like that.

I do have an old windows vista desktop that I built in 2007 that's probably a good candidate for a motherboard and processor.

Yeah, that M14 video guy... |
Are you still running your old spinner hard drive? You can upgrade and run A LOT faster. You'll still be limited by an outdated processor, but you'll notice a huge speed improvement by using a SSD. There are videos out there on how to do it to an iMac. Tony. Owner, TonyBen, LLC, Type-07 FFL www.tonybenm14.com (Site under construction). e-mail: tonyben@tonybenm14.com

I am but any video processing brings the processor to its knees. The 20 year old cpu is just not up to the task.

Spiritually Imperfect |
Graphics card and video RAM isn't up to snuff, either. I recently sold off a 2011 MB Pro and bought a 2019 model. What used to take 30-40 minutes to export (a 2-3 minute video) now takes 1 minute or less to export. If I have a ton of After Effects animation...it sometimes takes 2-3 minutes to export. Such is technology...

What do you think of something like this: I've never used AMD before, only Intel CPUs. Opinions on sticking to Intel for the CPU with an appropriate motherboard?
