Ain't that the truth. Look up the Blizzard of 1966. I got stuck in Utica. Nothing moved for 3 days. Drifts were up to second stories of houses. North of Syracuse the storm dumped over 100 inches!

I DON'T MISS IT AT ALL! I grew up just south of Syracuse, we rarely got lake effect snow but we got plenty of "regular" snow.

I sometimes get asked "How can you take the winters in Iowa?" I reply "I grew up near Syracuse, these winters are NOTHING."

I say the same thing here in Southwest South Dakota. Here they get in the neighborhood of 35 inches per year. Back in Syracuse where I grew up we're talking 180" to 200" a year!

But I will admit it is a lot damned windier here than there.

I have family south of Buffalo and they aren't having a nice time. They've been through this before and it's not fun.

I got caught in a White Out near Buffalo NY on the Interstate in about 1996. I'd heard of White Outs, but having never seen one before I had no idea.

All of a sudden, the visibility just turned into a white cloud all around me and my vehicle. They closed the Interstate very soon after.

I was able to exit very soon and found a truck stop/motel area where I was lucky to fill up and get lodging and meals. I was there for 3 solid days before they reopened the Interstate and let traffic go but the roads were still pretty darn crappy.

Family advised that Syracuse is fine but a bit north in Oswego they got hit big time.

My office is in Orchard Park right behind the Bills stadium, I'm hoping they can get our parking lot cleared by Monday.
Folks here take a strange pride in having more snow than the next town. Orchard Park got 77" or so and 20 minutes away I wound up between 4 and 5 feet. I'm thrilled to have not won the most snow title this time. Absolutely ridiculous amount of snow even for Buffalo.

As a lifelong Southerner, I am here to tell you that, down here, we think this is what winter is like for you- every year, and from start to finish of the season.

I think it was G.B. Shaw who said "Winter is not a season; it's an occupation."

Well, down here, I've gone more than a few winters wearing nothing more than a lightweight windbreaker for the cold.

I have family living in Auburn, NY. Some streets in town never get cleared on side walks. You can walk in the road ways. Or you can walk atop 3 plus feet of frozen white stuff. One winter, I decided to walk down to a little corner store. I walked 3 feet above the side walk on the snow. When I got to a house which had its walk cleared, I stepped down onto the slate walk way, only to find a huge damn mastiff dog sleeping on the sun warmed slate. Nope I said and went right back up on top...

Meanwhile, here at home (80 miles east of Orchard Park), we have only a dusting of snow. Lake effect, baby!

Feeling rather fortunate that the airport area only received about two feet. Now it’s just a matter of dealing with the wind and cold. Hopefully the last times I have to shovel snow in my life.

I’ve been texting with the son of one of my cousins. He’s career Air Force and is at Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station, not far north of Buffalo at all. He and his family live in Ransomville, north of the air base and just below Lake Ontario. All that to say, I was surprised to find out just how localized the massive storm was. He said they only got about 6” of snow at the house, and I assume just a bit more at the AFB.

Well, that sucks. I was actually going to pay if necessary to watch that game in a blizzard. It’d have been one for the ages!

This post is two years old, but seems to apply again today. One of the benefits over the years was having home field advantage for Buffalo.
It snows there, they need to play the game...
