Gas Grill or Flat Top - If You Could Only Have 1? Login/Join

My gas grill has had the floor of the cook area rot away & has a large hole above the gas cylinder.
It wasn't a buy once/cry once purchase, but it wasn't a cheap grill either. Pretty much split the difference between the WalMart specials & a Weber Genesis.

Got by over Memorial weekend with some heavy foil, but it's going to need to be replaced.

Overall plan, is to have a cook connector added to the NG line stub on my back patio.

Decision is, do I get a new NG supplied grill (Weber?), or a flat top (Blackstone, or similar)

What say you? And any brand suggestions either way?

Question:
Gas Grill or Flat Top/Griddle

Choices:
Gas Grill
Flat Top / Griddle

The Enemy's gate is down.

Grill. You can always purchase a griddle to add to your grill.

^^^ This.

Buy a smoke box, fill it with wood chips and you can smoke food. Rotisserie. Direct or indirect heat. Control the heat better...

I think you can do much more with a gas grill.

The burner elements on mine are all corroded, so I am not getting even flame. I am tired of propane grills so I bought a pitboss after seeing my BIl's in action. Love the smoke flavor and ability to do BBQ.

my vote is neither

I rebuilt my camp chief twice but finally just replaced it.... but what I have is two grates/grills from grill grate... one is reversed and so a flat top for searing the steak first and the other is for the standard grilling.

You order them for what ever size you need:

For years I redid the Char-Broil innards every two years or so. Then I went with a Gene$i$ and never looked back. But...I still lust for a restaurant kitchen sized/quality flat top (for inside, not so much for the grill). And, oh yeah, a full-sized fast drawing hood over top. Way back, 45 years or so ago, I did a few month stint as a short order cook, the versatility of a full-sized flat top can't be beat.

Weber grill all the way. Like was suggested, get the cast iron griddle inserts or even GrillGrates and then you’ll have the best of both worlds.

A Blackstone can’t grill anything.

I’d go with a flat top for gas and a charcoal grill for grilling.

Agree with TXLe, get the grille and add a flat top pan.

For years I bought the cheap $200 grille's from Lowes or HD. They lasted 2 years at most and they turned to trash. After doing that 4 or 5 times where I bought a new grille every 2 years, I finally bought a Weber Genesis and its 10 years old this year and still works great. It sits outside under a quality generic cover I got off amazon and I have to tell you it was a wise investment to go with a Weber.

I bought a Wilmington Grill 20 years ago. Other than the rubber tires and propane lines it is 100% stainless steel. I will never have to replace it. One can accessorize with full or half griddle if needed.

I spent major bucks on what I hoped was a onetime gas grill purchase. Of course parts wore out and needed to be replaced.

I saw an advertisement for the 'FireDisc' cooker, got one and haven't looked back.

Meats, Burgers, Chili, Hash, you name it it can be cooked to perfection.

You can always place a cast iron griddle on your grill grates.
It is what I do.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to have a nice BlackStone Griddle too but we only have so much space.

Suggest a Weber NG grill, then add the griddle insert. I've got some of those Grill Grates and although they they work pretty well, the flat griddle side is not a good option for grilling, and I stopped using the channel side because I found them very difficult, if not impossible to keep clean.

Also a NG hook up really makes things easy when considering fuel. Turn it on, ignite and cook.

3/4 of the time I go to my gas grill is to use the side burner and a cast iron skillet.

Gas grill is the winner in this either or... BUT... If I don't mention the standard old tried and true Weber Kettle, I would be upset with myself. Every grill man needs a Weber Kettle.

I had Char-Broils for years then finally moved up to a Weber Spirit and it’s been night and day better. Components are more solid, cooks much more evenly and food is delicious. I almost went with the Genesis though for me the mid level 3 burner spirit was the best move I could have made. I think it’s an E-310 and was somewhere around $5-550.

I wanted stainless grated though the flat cast iron ones are perfectly fine and clean up well with a good brush and proper pre cook prep.

As an added piece of mind, most of the grill parts are warrantied for 10 years so despite taking great care of it, if something goes out it’s covered.

All that said, couple of my buddies have the Blackstone flat tops and they love them. Easier for breakfast foods without the openings for food to fall through like a traditional propane grill.

I’ve got both, Gas grill gets used about 90% of the time unless all the kids are over and we do hibachi. That being said, I just bought a Master Built gravity feed charcoal grill and am loving it. I haven’t done steaks yet, but it is the shit for ribs, pork shoulder etc. I did burnt ends on it this past weekend and it was top notch. I’m old and never knew what I was missing with a Wi-Fi enabled cooker. Game changer for me.

I have both and the grill wins hands down. More versatile and much easier clean up. I like my Blackstone griddle but the grill gets more use.

Like the others have said, you can always buy a griddle to put on it. I use my grill at least 3-4 a week, even in what we call winter,(I know it is nothing to speak of).
