I had one of these. The only issue I had was the fuel line froze one morning bringing my wife to work after a snowstorm... The mechanic told me to get a grill cover to keep the engine bay warm when driving in cold weather. Other than that no issues...

This is a "just OK" engine. It is a Detroit Diesel, not the Isuzu built Duramax. It doesn't have nearly the power but can get out of it is own way. If the truck runs well and isn't a rust bucket, it's probably OK.

My last diesel truck was a 6.5TD.
I grew up around them. Even had a 5.7 in the beginning (1978).
A whole string of 6.2 diesels.

Call me crazy, but I liked the Chevy diesels.
I have a whole list of stuff I’d do to one if I had it now.

What kind of rig?
How many miles?
Whatcha gonna do with it?
Etc.

There are literally no bad pre EPA nonsense diesels including this one. Everyone of them is better than the nonsense that came later. What matters in a truck of this age is simply the rest of the truck.

Thank you guys. This one was offered to me. Turned out to be a 2wd and I need a 4wd. Good to know about these as I can add one to the possible look list. You guys are truly amazing! Wink

I beg to differ. The GM 6.2 was a total POS as was the oldsmobile 350 cubic inch diesel in the 80's.

The 6.2 is totally fine. No power but definitely not a pos.

Cracked blocks around where the starter bolts on, snapped crankshafts were also popular with them, and cracked heads between the valves were common with them. They put them in some boats and were nothing but issues. The cummins 5.9 or powerstroke 7.3 from that era were far superior engines.

I had a 1 ton 4wd for many years. Solid truck except it ate injection pumps.

I had its 6.2 predecessor, not a fan.

Perhaps a subjective example, but just look around a see how many of those trucks are still around compared to the others powered by Cummins or International.
