The F Twin series motors are dry sump so most of the oil doesn't settle in the sump. Actually quite a lot of bikes are like this and require specific ways to check oil which is a bit of a PIA.

My Stelvio was like this but I wanted to see where the level was after sitting so right after changing oil the first time I unscrewed the dip stick and oil started pouring out! After double checking that I'd put in the correct 5 quarts I checked it as the manual stated. "Let it run for 3-5 minutes then turn it off. Wait 1 minute then check with motorcycle upright." After doing it exactly as instructed the level was right on the full line.

I think I've found on every motor with a screw in dip stick you don't screw in when checking the level. But ones with press in dip sticks you insert it in all the way.

It's nice that your bike came with panniers, engine guard, skid plate, tall shield, and auxiliary lights. Does it have a center stand?

Yes it does, and I believe it's factory. That was actually another selling point over the KLR...I know they're frowned upon for serious off-road use due to the loss of ground clearance, but since I'm not planning on doing a bunch of that anyway it's certainly nice for maintenance. I had to have my son help me get it up on the stand the first time, but I'm getting the hang of doing it myself now.

My son and I have done a couple of rides around the county and into some of the adjacent ones over the past couple days. It's been a good time, and I'm loving riding the bike. Yesterday we did a big loop around Lake Wawasee and then came back through the local game preserve. We swapped bikes at one point...he wants one like mine now, lol.

I barely got his 82 Goldwing out of the driveway and decided just to park it. That thing has a clutch that's so heavy it's impossible for me to finesse it, the bike itself is stupid heavy with a lot of the weight is up high and in the front, and the running boards force my feet out so far I'm afraid I'm going to drop it every time I come to a stop. He's stronger than me and it's working ok for him, but I'm really happy I went with something a lot smaller and lighter.

Deals like this on used bikes occasionally show up from a local dealer I have bought a number of bikes from and I'm friends with. These are motorcycles he's taken on trade but he's not going to retail them, instead they will be going to auction. He has a little less invested than what similar bikes have recently brought at wholesale auction and he offers them to me for that same price. If I buy it saves him taking it to the auction.

A couple days ago he called asking if I'd be interested in a 2002 BMW F650GS. This uses the excellent single cylinder Rotax engine in a street and mild off-road adventure bike along the line of a KLR 650 (only with FI and more powerful). It's in nice condition for a 2002 with new tires, factory expandable panniers, removable trunk, center stand, auxiliary lights, engine guards, touring windshield, no check engine or ABS lights on dash, 28,500 miles, only $1,500.

I already have similar bikes like this so just can't use it but it would make a nice all around motorcycle for someone for not much money.
