I'm wondering what caliber they use. Seemed to work quite well.
I believe that they still use a Glock 22/23, with Speer Gold Dot. Most departments around here do, some allow 17/19.

I would wager he knew his capabilities and acted within that known envelope and will certainly give him the benefit of doubt while the investigation goes on
but will anyone ever know how many ( if any )
tiimes his shots connected?

Except I doubt if it "worked" at all. The perp was already on the ground before he opened fire at long range through his windshield while moving towards other officers and houses. The officers closer were in a much better position to observe, secure and continue to engage if needed.
At that distance, who knows where the bullets went. I've only seen tests up close through windshields and deflection can be a few inches. So...at ~25yds?

I am a ok with everything else, I mean after all I wasn’t there either...

The only thing I could add is I feel sorry for the cop who had an obvious mental breakdown.

He was “down” but he was not “out” and may have still been a threat. If you look close, as the officer arrives he is down but his upper body is off the ground (think of beginning sit up). Who knows if he still had the HiPoint in hand or not.
My point is being on the ground doesn’t mean he is no longer a threat. I am not going to second guess an officer making such a decision in the moment when other officers are taking fire. Now if the other officers who were there have an issue with how their buddy responded, I’ll listen but otherwise I am in the “do what you gotta do” camp.
As to “safety” issues, I am pretty confident that I could engage a target 40 feet down range with a “friendly” standing 6 feet away from the bad guy and be confident that even if I miss the bad won’t hit the good guy.
Would I shoot in such a scenario at the range or practicing? Hell no.
Real life gun fight for survival? That good guy is in a bad spot and at greater risk from the bad guy then from me attempting the shot.

thumperfbcJust to re-inforce this for all to consider, the distance really isn't that great. Estimates on here have ranged from 15-40 yards, if I recall correctly. At some point I'm sure we'll have a more accurate measurement but I don't believe we'll find that the distance was excessive.
Ideal shooting scenario? No, of course not. But as we tell our officers on the range we don't typically get to pick the time and place of shootings.... gotta play the cards you are dealt.

Dusty78I think they need to investigate that sidewalk...the grassy part took out more cops then the perp with the gun

Due to the angles and the suspect's body position, the officer in the vehicle had a better visual of the suspect and his hands than the officers behind the car a few feet away.
Just because a suspect goes down, that does not put them out of the fight. There are many videos showing suspects being shot, falling to ground due to sudden blood pressure drop, and then coming out of it once they are on the ground. Once they are horizontal on the ground, blood pressure goes back up and they are back in the fight if they are armed.

SBrooksTrying to remember if rough concrete will skip a bullet or not. He could aim low and have the bullet follow the concrete into the perp...

I think it's fairly safe to say, that the officer is an idiot to fire through his windshield. I would have him on desk duty for the rest of his career.

parabellumHe didn't want to miss out on shooting, so...
If any of you guys think that it was necessary for that officer to fire through his windshield and at some distance, at a guy who is already being shot at (and was already shot) and was down on the ground, you must be watching a different video.
I don't give the first shit about the dead BG, but let's not kid ourselves.

radiomanIt would have been easier if windshield cop was left handed.

snorisIn general:
Shooting through a windshield from outside the car—- bullet deflects downward
Shooting through a windshield from inside the car—-bullet deflects upward
Shooting at a downward angle off of flooring or concrete—-bullet does not bounce up at the same angle, but will somewhat “hug” the surface.
Several articles exist to back this up, I’ll find the links and post them if asked to do so.

Bullets react similarly when they encounter solid walls (brick, etc.).

220-9erIn addition to the challenges of shooting at a distance, the car was moving during at least some of the shots, he was either shooting one handed or driving with no hands on the wheel while braking to a stop. The audio also gives a clue as to his state of mind at the time.
But for the grace of god, no innocent's were hit. Maybe someday we'll hear a report of who's shots went where.
Just glad the right guy, and only the right guy, went down but there was a large dose of luck in that outcome.
