My Samsung has been showing its age, so we decided to look for a replacement. We went to Best Buy to see what was out there and to get a look at the Samsung QLED line. But as we saw that, we were absolutely blown away by the LG OLED on the wall next to it. It is astounding how sharp the picture is even compared to the QLED. I asked the salesman if he knew if it would be a Black Friday sale item. He told me not to worry, since they will price match out to January 12th.
Brought it home and have been hard pressed to leave the couch since. Have it paired with my Denon sound bar I picked up a few years ago. Even thought it cost more than I had anticipated spending, it is money well spent.

I got the LG C8 55”. It was on sale from $2499 down to $1899. From looking at the leaked Black Friday ads, it looks like it will be going down further to $1699. The 55 was the best size for the room (and our budget). We could have rearranged to accommodate a larger screen but we opted for the higher picture quality.

Are you coming from an LCD or a plasma? Is your room dark or bright? I’ve been looking at both the C8 OLED as well as the Samsung QLEDs. I’m leaning heavily toward the C8, but it is a pricier TV and want to be sure it’s right for my taste.

Yesterday I bought a Samsung 75 inch. It is not OLED. It was one step down from the OLED (NU800 series for those of you who care).
The sales guy told me the primary difference between the OLED and non-OLED model is the OLED has 16-bit colors, whereas the model I bought had 8 bit color. In addition, the OLED display is brighter, which can help if you have this TV in a bright area.
Scuba Steve Sig, you mentioned you plan to put yours in the basement. This is where I will be putting mine. My basement is mostly in-ground, so I don't have many windows. I was somewhat price sensitive and wanted to keep the cost of the TV under $1500. So for me, that meant I could afford the QLED model that is 65 inch, or I could afford the non-QLED model for 75 inch. Since I am going in a darker basement, the brighter display of the QLED isn't really needed.
Both the QLED and non-QLED models had the same refresh rate, so that wasn't a factor. Since mine is in a basement, and I could not tell much difference between QLED and non-QLED, I went with the larger 75 inch non-QLED.

These are the first that may cause me to give up my Panny 65" plasma. It's still top notch especially in the dark room where it lives, but the new OLED is pretty zippy.

I like my 65" Panasonic plasma. It keeps the room warm in the winter.

Be careful when comparing tv's in a store like Best Buy (or any other big box retailer).
They can and will change the settings to make one look better than the other to drive buyers to certain brands week to week.
When buying any high-end tv, ask for the remotes and play with the settings yourself first. I will set both to the default "movie" mode to compare them, if one is set to movies and the other is on standard, it will come across very different.

OLED and QLED are vastly different technologies. QLED is a nothing special LED backlit LCD display, which is what pretty much everything other than OLED is now.
OLED isn't a backlit transmissive display. The LED elements are the actual pixels. This is a far superior, albeit still more expensive technology. I've been waiting for it to go mass market, and the prices to come down, but so far they haven't.

I'm with BBMW waiting for 4K OLED prices to come down which might happen when 8k models are available.
We're running a Mitsubishi WS-65315 63" rear projection unit we bought in early 2004. No HDMI connections among other things which have put a crimp on interfacing newer technology.
The room could easily handle a larger screen as well. But the larger OLED offerings don't pass the cost sanity test as yet.
We have an 32" TCL 2010 vintage in our bedroom which has been bullet proof. The Series 6 65" 4K TCL 65R617 ROKU TV has gotten great reviews and runs $1k (just saw it on sale at Best Buy for $900 ). If the old Mits dies and OLED prices remain in the stratosphere, this TCL might just be the ticket. This message has been edited. Last edited by: bald1,

Gibb and BBMW have some very valid points.
First, in my prior post in this thread, I mistakenly typed OLED where I meant to type QLED.
Second, Gibb has a very valid point - the settings on these things can make a huge difference - once must be diligent and keep this in mind when viewing in the store. It makes it a bit easier if you stay within one brand, as determining similar settings across brands can be confusing...

I don’t have an OLED TV. In fact, I don’t have a TV of any sort. But I’m really impressed with the OLED screen of my iPhone X. Neat display technology – I wonder what’s next. Maybe inorganic LED?

Sony makes a couple OLED that are even crisper if you can believe it, but they want even more $$$.
I really like those LG OLED in a darker room. My living room is just too bright. I'm leaning toward the Samsung QLED for it.

^ After bashing the QLED above, I will say it works at least as well as any LCD display. Just realize that's what your getting. And if you're looking at that you can get any makers LCD.

OLED you need to worry about burn in and it isn't as good in a bright room as a QLED would be.

Our basement is a walkout, so a fair amount of windows, but viewing will be at night. I'm looking at going 75"+ though, and it looks like these TVs are still crazy expensive in that size. Plus, our kids use the area as a their romper room, so dropping that coin might be a bad idea. Thanks for the links though.

I've been a Sony guy for a long time, TV's, Bluray players, receivers, they all worked together. Last Christmas we went out to get a new Sony for the bedroom and came upon the LG OLED, as you stated great picture. We ended up getting the 65" LG OLED and an LG 4K player. To get the full Dolby Atmos sound effects we have since added the LG SK10Y soundbar and rears. Two weeks ago we replaced the Sony in the living room with another LG 65" and LG 4K player. In less than a year my whole Sony world has changed. We are very happy with the OLED and the SK10 soundbar.

The room with the new tv has a fair amount of windows so there is plenty of light during the day. The picture quality is still great. At night in the dark, Holy shit. It is just amazing. The Samsung it replaced was LED. It might have been a LED/LCD hybrid. I just don’t remember.
