It's still in great functional condition. The display intermittently comes and goes (well, it's always displaying something but brightness comes and goes). But audio-wise, it's still in great condition. However, I don't need it anymore. I just run AV through the HDMI capable receive I had to buy (for Prime and TV). I use the H-K amp that was connected to the Anthem for the front channels coming out of the receiver. It's a shame to dump it. But it's probably hard to sell and pricey to ship. What do you guys do w/ old but semi-audiophile level components? Is there someplace that would make good use of it? "Wrong does not cease to be wrong because the majority share in it." Did you come from behind that rock, or from under it? |
Once I was forced into HDMI connections (that's a 2 page rant in itself) I used my Anthem AVM30 for my bedroom TV rig. If you have a need for a two-channel stereo setup anywhere you can go through the menu and default the inputs to stereo and use it like a normal analog preamp with built-in DAC for digital (no need to utilize surround modes). If you have no use for it there's bound to be a teenager nearby that needs a preamp for their retro vinyl system. It's too nice a piece of gear to dispose so if all else fails throw it on craigslist cheap so you can avoid shipping it. I would avoid eBay and Audiogon because its value is probably not worth the BS involved selling through them. "Every time you think you weaken the nation" Moe Howard

Me when I get in situations like this (mostly old radio gear but also some of my older stereo stuff) , I put it up on Craig's list in the come take it section with a description that means only someone who knows what it is will come. I've given some older stuff to some neat people that way. Been very happy to see it get used. “So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong, and strike at what is weak.”

I wonder how much it would cost to ship. The thing is pretty heavy - 40 lbs? I think the transformer for this pre-amp is bigger than the ones in some of my receivers. If it's reasonable (say $50 or less), maybe I could Karma it here if it's something that people would want. I'll check w/ UPS next week. I don't want to hassle with craiglist. If I dump it, I'll just take it to a local charity. "Wrong does not cease to be wrong because the majority share in it." Wait, what? |
Older high end components are sometimes in demand as spare parts; perhaps call a local purveyor of quality stereo systems and ask if they want to buy it cheap before donating it. “Remember to get vaccinated or a vaccinated person might get sick from a virus they got vaccinated against because you’re not vaccinated.” - author unknown

Maybe list it on EBay. I have a closet full of that stuff that "someday" I will revive. You never know when someone needs to complete an old system. I also think there is a site that list old Audiophile equipment too. True the old stuff was really oriented to good old two channel audio and not much of that going on now days, unfortunately.

It's actually a very decent pre-amp. It's just that for AV, the receiver is less complicated for the connections and also has the new codecs (THX, DTS, Dolby, what not). I just don't have a decent listening room right now to take advantage of the pre-amp. Plus, my old ears are not as critical as they used to be. But the pre-amp w/ a decent amp and a decent pair of speakers in a decent room - joyful listening. "Wrong does not cease to be wrong because the majority share in it."
