A couple of weeks ago when we got some big snow, someone mentioned the storm was named Diego. I didn't think much about it until yesterday, hearing that the current storm is called Gia.

I don't remember winter storms being named before. I know we do that for Hurricanes, but winter storms? Is this new? Confused

God bless America.

Wow... looks like I haven't been paying proper attention to winter storms, huh?

Thank you, VBVAGUY. Will you get any of this weather out your way?

God bless America.

Giving respect where due or adding drama to an otherwise boring life?

There's been some epic blizzards in the past. We have had some storms recently But nothing like the Blizzard of 'XX.

One of the media’s douchiest ideas in the last few years. Just another example of media turning the hype knob up to 10.

Dad still lives in my hometown in the Upper Midwest. They cover a named storm like it’s a damn hurricane. It drops 2” of snow or less most times which is nothing in that part of the US.

To paraphrase Dad, “I’d never leave home if I believed the doom & gloom weather forecast.”

Drives me nuts too. Maybe it’s a distraction technique so people forget about how bad they really are at predicting what is actually going to happen. Winter storm Eviseration Ragnorok III is predicted to cause major disruption by dumping anywhere from 2 inches to 72 feet....

My wife and Mom are falling into this hype as well, I’m supposed to be flying out tomorrow to Logan. They want me to push the flight to Monday so I don’t have to drive in the snow. The thing is, I’m flying to Boston where I’ll then drive my rental car to the White Mtns in NH for a couple days of ice climbing and skiing. No matter how many times I try to explain why no matter when I leave I will still be driving in snow, all I’ve been hearing about for the last 2 days is why I shouldn’t drive TO the airport while it’s snowing.

The naming of winter storms began Nov 2012 by the Weather Channel Athena a Northeaster.

Also note it is not an official practice or recognized practice.

They all have the same name for me; the name is applied when I come inside with a snow-packed frozen beard: "It's a bitch out there!"

Because there is a weather channel and they need to talk about weather 24/7. So they invent new ways to dramatize the same old weather we have always had.

You may be surprised if you check your home owners insurance policy. In past few years many have quietly added a "deductible" for named storms. It reduces your coverage.

"and there are 30 million people in the path of this killer storm!".

Give me a frickin' break. It's heading towards the Northeast and one guy had a heart attack shoveling snow in Ohio.

I decided it was worth the 80 bucks to get a hotel up here to just not hear about driving up in the morning anymore. The storm had already begun when left, so I went up 81 into the mouth of the monster. I’m not going to lie, it was white knuckle driving what with occasionally having to adjust the intermittent wiper setting and all. I’m telling you, only vechicles purposely made for this type of driving like my 10 year old Lincoln, or maybe a Honda Civic or Ford Mustang could possibly have made it up here.

When I first got into Northern Va I was panicked thinking it had gone beyond thunderdome with people crowding around hastily made bonfires on the side of the road. I breathed a sigh of relief when I got closer and realized they were just Tesla owners. It was also a relief to be around Northern VA drivers that know how to drive in bad weather. People up here know to test the road by randomly and aggressively checking their brakes, swerving periodically to avoid shadows, and the safest drivers put on their blinkers and use the center lane to go 30mph slower than everyone else around them. I just hope we all make it through the night. Wish us mid-atlanticians luck.
