If the U.S.A. felt the need to completely capture and over rule a country the size of the Ukraine, that was pretty much right next door,

Couldn't we accomplish that in 90 days or less?

What the hell was Russia thinking?

Now they are just looking silly.

Sure wasn't. That was failures in leadership, will, determination, and execution.

I wonder if Russian is going all-out in Ukraine, much as we didn't go all out in Vietnam? I have the feeling Putin thought Ukraine would collapse quickly and not have the will to put up a fight, and so didn't give it everthing. Plus, he may have been unwilling to commit more forces to Ukraine, which could have left other parts of Russia weak and relatively undefended. For example, I feel certain Russia feels that it has to keep certain elements of its army on the Polish border (as an example) and along its Asian borders.

Viet Nam, neither north regulars or south guerrillas defeated us. They killed us, shot us, maimed us, bled us imprisoned us but it was McNamara and Johnson that defeated us.

I think that's the point I was making. No matter how big and powerful a country might be, a lot of factors determine winning or losing a war.

Viet Nam wasn't next door either. I would think that if we wanted we could take Mexico in less than a month. But then again it Mexico so why bother?

Russia may actually BE a bona fide mega military superpower. My guess is most of the stuff we read about that mess is somewhere between mostly and completely inaccurate. I'd hate to get in a shooting war with Russia, particularly with a weak Administration, Congress, and shitty foreign policies. I once saw a Russian Warship crossing a tunnel I was entering on my way to work many years ago. I was truly astonished at the power and sophistication of that ship, with all the sailors lined up on the rails standing at attention in uniform. It was truly intimidating. I remember thinking, I hope we never have to mess with those guys, and if we do, we better do it good the first time or we won't have a second chance. It was impressively intimidating in every sense of the word. This was before the internet, because if there had been the internet, I would have known they were coming for a visit. It was a total surprise for me, and felt fortunate to have been lucky enough to have seen it up front and personal. If I was an old man I might have shit my pants.

Ya shouldn’t be. The people driving and protecting that boat won’t stand up to the Panama navy net alone a real navy. The equipment is rusty and I suspect won’t work at all.

I’ve said it before. Only good Russian is a unnalived one.

I can bring you a couple of Ukrainians and let them tell you how bad the Russian military really is.
And what monsters they are.

Russia isn’t the Soviet Union which was a lot of other countries in addition to Russia. Even then, they were never tested in an all out ground war against NATO. Now many of those countries are part of NATO.
When the USSR fell it was clear much of the talk about superiority in any area was largely hype. Probably pushed by our military suppliers and the Pentagon.
What both the USSR and Russia do have is the threat of nukes. They are probably less capable and well maintained then we are told but nobody can take the risk.
That’s the real basis for giving them any real respect.
