This is along the lines of what I was thinking.
The OP's boat should be a minimal expense and a lot of fun, not like the 30-40 ft. sailboat I've always wanted...

Hope he's good at swimming in the middle of the night. Sooner or later that leaking wooden boat is going to end up on the bottom along with all of his stuff!
