It looks like too many pistols these days have big ass honking rails in place what used to be attractive dust covers.

If I have one or two house guns with rails with lights, I get it. But for all the others we take to the range or carry on our person for everyday SD, WHY to all those guns ALSO have to have rails ?

It's probably just me, but I don't like how most of what could otherwise be a very nice looking guns are ruined by this feature.

I also notice that the previous level of style and overall good looks has been excessively (I think) overtaken with too many cuts, angles, sharp edges, and the like, some functional, but more not. I think its very distracting.

I'm not talking about better ergos, which i do appreciate. What I'm saying is if you go to the website of any major brand of semi auto makers, virtually none of them look nice any more.

I'm obviously out of touch with modern shooters and collectors, since if their bad looks hurt sales, they wouldn't be selling. I suspect that all that crap is actually ATTRACTING the major segment of the currently buying public.

I guess I'm disappointed that exactly what repels me is exactly what attracts most of the buying public.

I'm a fish out of water I suppose. What say you ?

Sounds like a business opportunity. Design and 3d print snap on covers? That stuff is over my head by a large distance, but im sure someone could devise something. Now as to looks being improved, id be a hard wait and see.

These are the ones that should never have accessory rails, to me: The 1911, Browning Hi-Power, the P210, 220, 225, 226, 228, 229, 239. Everything else, I couldn’t care less.

Myself. Although I will say That when Glock added rails to their line of pistols I think they did it very tastefully.

Many products are designed by the art or marketing department. We're in the era of everything being tactical, so they put on rails and offer various desert color finishes.

Long gone are the days of elegance or function being primary in many products. Retro styled alternatives don't sell as well, or they'd make everything retro.

I sure hope manufacturers don't start putting beaver tails on every pistol.

Some guns should never have rails, or at least have the option of getting one without rails. Someone one mentioned 1911’s, hi powers and the classic P series, to those I’ll add third Gen Smiths. However, what really bothers me these days is that the slide of every pistol seems to be covered in serrations. It looks terrible, and really serves no purpose.

I still have two Beretta 92 pistols that don't have a rail. It should never have a rail. lol

I preordered the HK VP9cc railless frame. Whenever it finally ships, I will order the gun. It will stay optic less as well.

1000% agreed. The ugly rail has been a deal breaker for me on several good deals for used 229. I am even tempted to remove the ugly thing from a lightly battered P30 that I pack around regularly. On top of adding an ugly rail to every model they also put them on compact CCW models that should be sleek and free from sharp edges, pointy corners and features that snag. I had hoped it was a fad but it just gets worse and worse.

Yeah, When shopping for a P227, I wasn't going to get one for the longest time until an SAS version became available.

Seen the new Desert Eagles? The rail on them now would come in handy if you had to cut down a tree.

I too like the older smooth dust over style. I understand that the rail is for a WML, but I don’t use one on my pistol, I carry a light in the other hand if I’m using a pistol to search the house for the bump in the night.

Also don’t like all the serrations or cuts in the slides on newer pistols. But that’s just me, I’m sure.

I agree as well.
I sold a P226 Navy because I didn't like the look of the rail.
Not sure why I bought it in the first place.
