Question for the Builders, Brick Masons, and Other Knowledgeable Folk of the Forum
Recently purchased a brick home and have noticed, at regular intervals, small rope-ends protruding from the brick. What are these?

Every home prior has either featured predominantly siding and / or I just wasn't paying attention to the brick portions. Smile

Given the locations shown in the pictures, they look like weep holes to let any moisture out from behind the brick.

Yes they are weep holes.
It is an easy way to allow moisture to wick out from the back side of a brick wall.

Most likely used the rope to keep insects from building nests in the void.

As a former bricklayer, smlsig has hit the nail on the head. The reason why you don't just leave an open joint between the brick and rope is used, is so insects, etc. can't crawl behind the brick and build nests/get into the house/etc.

Excellent - thank you all. I liked the fuse comment haha - that's the first thing I thought of when I first noticed them! Smile
