The real reason is probably something like putting the cap on is a an extra step after the filler neck flange gets secured. By doing away with the cap, that's one less production cost.

And just like that, some poor cap twister-on'r robot is out of a job. In this economy. Frown

Don’t really care for the button on the inside to unlock. The ‘02 Sequoia the the daughter drives has a lever inside that you have to pull to release the door. Mrs slosig’s gas door locks when the car locks and unlocks when the car is unlocked or the driver’s door is opened. Very similar effect, but one less thing for the operator to fool with. Of course they both have gas caps, so there is that…

Wasn’t my choice. My performance car has the same thing, the lever to pull. Thankfully the gas door locks. But it has the screw on cap. I like the Honda system better but I didn’t buy either because of a fuel cap or locking mechanism. Driving dynamics > everything else.

I have to agree on the driving dynamics bit. Besides, even a button or lever inside beats the heck out of the old locking gas caps that require a key to open the cap. Thankfully those are gone. Their passing is not in the least lamented.

Our 2024 Mazda CX5 we purchased back in December has a gas cap.

As does my wife's '24 CX-50. Its fuel filler door momentarily unlocks when the car is turned off. No button to push, no lever to manipulate. If no one opens the filler door in roughly 30 seconds, it automatically relocks itself.

My 2022 Mazda MX-5 has a twist on gas cap with a push-open door. But then it also has a real 6-speed manual transmission.

Ask me how I know.
Had to fabricate a tool to get it out.

The capless systems should come with a tool to insert into the spout, it's basically a funnel, to add fuel from a can.

At least there's one that comes with my Honda.

I have several. Bought them when gas/diesel went north of $5/gallon. The likelihood of someone siphoning off of me around these parts is pretty slim, but I don't trust anyone.

The funnel is junk when used with a gas can that requires pressure on its spring loaded nozzle to get fuel to flow. It works well though with my VP Racing and Buc-ee's "water" jugs. The treaded portion of the spout on those jugs does not play nice with the capless fillers.

I thought gas caps were obsolete until I found one on my '24 Toyota Crown. Not sure if there is a reason as it's a hybrid but when I pointed it out to the Salesman all he did is shrug and say it was at least tethered.

My car doesn’t have a gas cap. Come to think of it, it doesn’t have a gas tank either…

It’s a Mustang Mach E.

My 2014 Escape didn’t have a gas cap.

I wouldn't know. I converted my gas cans to the old style without the spring loaded shit. Also drilled a vent for the top back for air to get in when I use the fuel can. It's a metal cap which screws on.

I would think it’s a cost savings model.

I'm starting to see the "gascap-less" cars more and more over the last few years, and I don't mind it, one less thing to lose/forget/mess with.

Maybe one day we can do away with the gas cap covers too, (same applies to EV's charge port covers).
