I'm tired of screens and digital entertainment for our kids! They're fairly limited on screen time as it is, but more than a little is too much, in my opinion. We do soccer, karate, and other stuff, but as winter looms, we've been fretting (see what I did there?!?) about what to add for indoor entertainment.

I just bought an Epiphone Les Paul Special II Plus electric, along with a Marshall MG10 amp, with all the trimmings. Tomorrow I plan on picking up a Yamaha JR1 Acoustic (3/4 size) as well. Now to stock up on earplugs for me and the missus!

Anyone recommend an online learning source besides just YouTube? I pluck around just a little bit by ear, but have no business trying to teach anything but bad habits on guitar!

Www.ultimate-guitar.com has lots of material on it. I think you made good choices with that Epiphone Les Paul and Yamaha acoustic.

I use an app called Songsterr. If you can read tablature, there are a ton of songs available and it has some cool functions like slowing down the tempo and focusing on sections at a time.

I haven't used it, but www.justinguitar.com generally gets a lot of recommendations on guitar forums for online beginner lessons.

How old are your kids?

What I use, or have used, for online teachers probably has little relevance to teaching kids—-depending on how young they are. I think the most important thing is to line them up with a teacher (online) that is directing the lessons at kids, with the idea of making the lessons enjoyable, so that they want to play.

I’ve used guitar tricks, an app that’s easy to use and has a ton of stuff on it....it’s a pay annual thing for somewhere around 100 bucks.
I bought my son an acoustic/electric for Christmas a few years ago...and told him to just suck it up and give it a year, after that he would have learned enough to start actually having fun and not want to put it down...a year passed, he played frequently and actually said...”hey dad, you were right about the guitar...I’m having a blast with it....thank you!”.......Made me very happy!

Great ideas guys, thanks! TMats, the offspring are 7/9/11/13, and I'm not sure I'll be signing them up for individual private lessons right now. The 9/11/13 year olds all take piano lessons, and will continue with those. If at some point, one or more of them would like to earnestly pursue guitar in addition to, or instead of piano, we might consider that. For the time being, I'm just looking for online resources and tutorials, etc.

Justin guitar is great, Guitar tricks is great. There is a ton of info to be had free (You must really be objective though) Nice guitar choices, I use these two sites and do face to face almost weekly.

+1 on the Songsterr app. It's one of the best learning tools I've seen in my 25 years of playing.
