I had something similar happen at my house a few years ago, and I am armchair quarterbacking.

I'm downstairs, I hear my wife talking to someone at the front door. It's roughly 9pm at night. Lady reeks of cigarettes, and her car is idling at the top of my driveway. She asks for money for "gas or something". We were 7 miles to the closest gas station, and I thought it was odd she asked for money for gas, instead of just asking for gas. And her car was idling in the street.

I told her I couldn't help, I didn't have $$$. I close the door and ask my wife why she would open the door at 9pm to someone she doesn't know, we had a window in the door to see outside. I asked my wife how do you know there weren't 3 guys out there with baseball bats waiting for me to come outside?

My wife wasn't happy with what I mentioned to her. The next night our neighbor calls. Same lady, asking for money. My wife got the point then.

DON'T OPEN YOUR DOOR TO STRANGERS.
