Future SIL bought a house that isn't on municipal water a few years back. One of the first things she did was replace the toilet with one of those dual flush (2 push buttons on the front of the tank). I sure hope they've gotten better over the last 7 years or so because I hate that damn thing. The high pressure flush can barely flush a kleenex, let alone anything else in the bowl. I'll have to to look to see if I can find a brand name on it the next time I'm over there...

arcwelderOne complaint I heard often, was that peoples kids wouldn't push either button properly, so many "leavings."

OKCGeneI seem to recall a saying "If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down."

Sure, when that's intentional, OK. It seems folks young ones would just make a stir, because the flush doesn't engage without a deliberate push.

ensigmaticPlenty of suggestions. Thanks, all!
At this point I think I'm inclined to follow Arc's recommendation and go with a standard low-flow/-flush model.
The current "best in class" appears to be the American Standard Champion 4 or Champion Pro.
Next question: What's the skinny on these wax ring replacement kits like the
Fluidmaster Better than Wax Universal Toilet Seal? Good or no good?

FredwardI agree with the dual flush being a bad idea. I've installed American Standard Champion IV models in my last two houses. They're low water usage toilets, but I buy them because they actually work. They're the ones they used to demonstrate with 24 golf balls. Also, they're inexpensive, about 200 bucks each.

slosigIt is really interesting how different technologies seem to mature at different rates in different places. From experience, Great Britain and Europe have had dual flush toilets for a long time and in the time I lived in GB (a year and a half in the mid-eighties) and the times I’ve visited the continent (sporadically, as recently as this March/April) their dual flush toilets worked well and didn’t give trouble. At the same time, their “shower systems” were ungodly expensive and nothing but a poorly built piece of garbage. Seems like exact reverse is true here...
