I just pulled my Clawson 1911 "Service Pistols" and the "Commercial Series" books - both are hardcover first editions which I bought when they were first published. Did a quick search and dropped my jaw at the value of both books.

Champagne taste, beer budget. A minor point, but the staking done on the front sight shows how well this this pistol was made.

Funny thing is that back in 1980ish I fired my first .45 in the basement of a LGS in Little Ferry NJ. That .45 was also a Singer as I remember un-informatively remarking to the owner that I thought Singer "only made sewing machines".

One could only wonder about these things. You never know what treasures you may have at hand. Could have bought it then for $100. I didn't want it. Got a nice new shiny '70 Gold Cup instead.

I think the North American Arms guns are more rare, although they are less desirable. Reminds me of this too:

Another wartime incident caused Danny Simpson of Ottawa, Canada, much grief. In 1990 he was given six years imprisonment for robbing a bank of $6000 using an elderly Colt .45 pistol. He was arrested and the gun was impounded by the police, where it was recognized as an extremely rare collectors' item, worth between $12,000 and $100,000. It was made under licence by the Ross Rifle Company in Quebec City during WW1, one of only 100 Colt .45's ever made there. Simpson could have walked into any gun shop and sold the pistol for at least twice the haul from his raid without breaking the law.

IIRC a Singer was recently sold at auction and brought over $400K (with the buyer's premium).

Of course I could be "mis-remembering", I'm at that age. LOL

Yep. This near-mint condition Singer 1911 sold at auction in January for $414k: https://www.rockislandauction....nufacturing-co-model

However, that was in significantly better condition, and had documentation attached.

That's more like what I'd expect from this newer one in the OP. This one is in a little bit better condition, and the authentication letter from the "1911 Guru" himself likely adds a bit to the value, so this one could fetch closer to $90k-$100k.

On the other hand, GunAuction has fewer users than GunBroker, so not as many people will see it. So who knows.

Do not disregard the fact that Clawson put it's value at $75,000. I would not expect it to go any higher.

Clawson appraised it in 2013 and died in 2015 and the market has gone up considerably even since then, as evidenced by the recent sales posted. This one will probably go for well north of $100K.

At an auction all it takes is two people that want the same item and have the wherewithal to make that happen.

I have seen items bring many times their pre-auction estimate.
