Speaking of Social Security, of those over 62, when did you start to claim and why? Any regrets?

Mustang-PaPaSpeaking of Social Security, of those over 62, when did you start to claim and why? Any regrets?
Your name on your SS card needs to be what's on your birth certificate.
Your dl really needs to be your birth name as well or should be.
Really surprised your DL hasn't come up yet as being an issue.
Does Georgia have and use the Gold star ID system?
Texas does and it would be caught then not being the same as your birth name.
Having a CDL, CHL and passport for myself would have been an issue as the birth certificate are used on those.

parabellumGold star ID? I don't know what that is. I got my DL in this state in 1986.
Now, my carry permit has my full name. If I toss that across the counter at the SS office, will they call in SWAT?
March 17, 2023, 09:28 PM
Mustang-PaPaIts a gold star in the dl but is really called Real ID by the feds. you can use you DL to exit and enter certain foreign country's. Thought all states finally went to it a few years ago.

Probably get thrown on the ground and searched but they will do the same for refusing to wear your mask if you try to enter..:-)
Think our location had metal detectors so the non mask wearing armed security guard would have been on me if I was armed.

Nope, Indiana doesn't mandate it yet but they are working on it.
March 17, 2023, 09:44 PM
Mustang-PaPayeah I knew some states were slow about finally going to it but thought they had all finally agreed on a final date. Covid might have delayed that though.
March 17, 2023, 09:45 PM
parabellumSo, if I understand correctly, I need to get my DL changed to show my full first, middle and last name, and having done so, I can then use my new DL and birth certificate to apply for SS.
March 17, 2023, 09:47 PM
Mustang-PaPaYes, your carry permit will probably work as your ID but your DL really needs to be correct also.
The first step to applying for SS is creating your SS acct which for me not having a correct dl name caused issues creating the acct online which I first attempted to due around the time covid hit and due to all the covid bs I put it off till recently when my wife and I both turned 65 and we needed to sign up for Medicare insurance and to also start drawing SS benefits. She just retired but I would have started drawing my SS benefits early had i not had trouble creating my ss acct and then putting if off due to covid.

parabellumI'm severely allergic to bullshit. I'll probably have a reaction in the DMV or SS office.
MY DL has a black start in the upper right hand corner. What does that mean? Or, I should say a white star surrounded by a black circle.
March 17, 2023, 09:58 PM
Mustang-PaPaHad to look up black star for Georgia and its the Real ID and could also be gold according to this;
https://dds.georgia.gov/georgi...cense-topics/real-idYeah on your BS allergy just take a valium and bit your tong. Its not an easy I know.
Really surprised they didn't catch your name issue before now. I know even though I had a CDL forever they made everyone show up with a birth certificate and other Id to make sure everything was correct when we went real id here.
March 17, 2023, 10:02 PM
parabellumSo, all I need is to get my middle name added to my DL, then hang a piece of useless cotton rag off of my face and go see people at the SS who don't give the first shit about me.
March 17, 2023, 10:06 PM
Mustang-PaPaYep!
I paid in all those years and it was never an issue until I wanted to start drawing my paid in SS benefits. Ain't that some shit.
Lucky for me my wife was with me when I went. She had something she needed to straighten out with her acct so it help calm me down some but was worried when it came mask wearing time. She's more vocal then I am about the mask wearing bs.

6gunspara, if you can get the drivers license taken care of and in line with how your name is on your birth certificate, you won't have to worry about a visit to the SS office. I applied online for my benefits and talked with a couple of people over the phone a few times. Didn't have to visit thankfully. I get the allergy to bullshit too! But as Mustang says, you may have to bite your tongue on occasion to get this through.

GeorgeairAlso, makes it much easier to fly, though I don't think our host is much for planes, the people on them or the destinations. Other than Mr. Truong of course, we all want a flight with him!
In MS, the most backwoods state in the land (brags the AL native), I was able to get an updated license online for $10 or so, sent to my home. Either way, on your next renewal this will likely be what you have.

Thanks! Having a 9mm AR, two 5.56's, a pistol 5.56 and components for another pistol and rifle....I'm set.

But I'll think of something symbolic and memorable to buy.

Fed161You don't need to submit a drivers license to file for Social Security Benefits. You never did. Here is a list:
Documents we may ask for include:
Your Social Security card or a record of your number.
Your original birth certificate, a copy certified by the issuing agency, or other proof of your age. We must see the original document(s), or copies certified by the agency that issued them. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies.
If you were not born in the U.S., proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful alien status. We must see the original document(s), or copies certified by the agency that issued them. We cannot accept documents if they have expired. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies.
A copy of your U.S. military service paper(s) if you served before 1968. A photocopy is acceptable.
A copy of your W-2 form(s) and/or self-employment tax return for last year. A photocopy is acceptable.
If our records show you’ve already provided proof of age or citizenship or lawful alien status for an earlier Medicare or Social Security claim, you do not need to submit the documents again.
We will return all documents and photocopies unless specifically told otherwise.
Here is the link to what you need to submit.
https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/r...anner/applying5.htmlAny issues with your DL are of no concern to SSA. Anticipating a few questions:
1. Why dos SSA ask for the previous years W2 or tax return?
A. It's to your advantage. Depending upon the time of year, the previous years earnings may not be posted to your earnings record. If you submit the return or W2, we can credit your earnings record immediately rather than wait until it gets posted. Gets you your money sooner.
In most cases it's not necessary to visit an SSA office to file for benefits. You can file on line.

Thank you, but is it not an issue that my Social Security number is associated with my middle name only- and a shortened version of it at that? Would this not be in impediment when applying for SS benefits? All mail I receive from the SSA has my middle name and last name. My first name appears nowhere in it.
All of the stuff about correcting the name on my DL- which has first name, middle initial and last name- was in an effort to get the SSA to correct the name my SS# has been associated with since I got it in the 1970s.
If you tell me that I will be able to file for SS benefits under my middle name only, then there's no problem. Otherwise, what do I need to do?
March 18, 2023, 04:58 PM
Fly-SigFWIW, I filed last November for benefits and did it all online. I already had an online SS account. The payment is electronically deposited into my bank account. I did not have to show any documentation of any kind.
March 18, 2023, 05:09 PM
parabellumWell, it may be that I don't need to take any action at all, but I'll need to know for certain, of course. I'll call the SSA on Monday and see if I can get a straight answer.
March 18, 2023, 05:28 PM
6gunspara, have you established an online account yet with SSA?
