Wait, what? |
$139 for a standard size 17 lb. propane cylinder? I’ll stick with good old fashioned heavy steel. “Remember to get vaccinated or a vaccinated person might get sick from a virus they got vaccinated against because you’re not vaccinated.” - author unknown

The only reason I could see considering one is a situation that REQUIRED the weight savings. For the life of me I can't think of such a situation. I've attended a lot of LP safety meetings in my career. I have a huge respect for its energy potential and ability to destroy things when not handled properly.

Composite cylinders that hold fairly decent pressure (2,000 to 5,000 PSI) have been in use for a long time. I wore one of these on by back starting around 1991 when we upgraded from Scott steel bottles to SurvivAir composite bottles. The compressed air tank I ran on my paintball marker was about 4K psi around that same time. As long as it will tolerate the effects of the gas and gets tested at the required intervals it should be fine. https://multimedia.3m.com/mws/...g-specifications.pdf Pronoun: His Royal Highness and benevolent Majesty of all he surveys 343 - Never Forget Its better to be Pavlov's dog than Schrodinger's cat There are three types of mistakes; Those you learn from, those you suffer from, and those you don't survive.

Son-in-law operates a propane business that he took over from his mother that has been operating for at least 35yrs.... weight savings of about 4 to 6 lbs empty weight on composite vs steel for 5 gallon size bottle.... recertification at 5 and 10yrs use... but filler operator needs additional certification for polly composite bottles vs steel bottle certification. plus the cost factor can be much more for composite vs steel... ...... drill sgt.

Rightwire, drill sgt, Thanks. That’s the info I was looking for. I have several steel “bottles”. I have two 500 gallon tanks with wet lines on them. In addition to a grill and a griddle, I have a propane generator and a couple other things. Had LPG powered tractors and pickups growing up. The more birthdays I stack up, the more I look into weight savings on things I’m going to be lifting in and out of a truck bed.
