Does Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law extend beyond your home, to whatever situation one finds oneself in?

Yes. Anywhere you are legally allowed to be. BUT, stand your ground (SYG) requires lawful use od deadly force. If you are walking down a street and someone jumps out with a knife, you can pull your gun and shoot them because:
A. SYG means you do not have a duty to retreat. Less time trying to run away, more time defending yourself.
B. You are in fear for great bodily injury or death to you or someone else.

In your own house SYG is not as much of a factor as "presumed intent". If you find someone illegally in your house, the state recognizes that presumed intent exists and deadly force may be used.

The key to this video is, while they were running away from the shooter, they were still in the house and presumably the home owner was in danger. If they were shot in the back, it still would have been a justified shooting. Once they made it outside, if the homeowner had followed them out and continued to shoot them, the press conference would have been different.

Disclaimer; like all legal issues, this is a very nuanced area and my generic answer doesn’t cover anything beyond the basics.

Thanks for the details, SpinZone.

It's deplorable that nuances influence life-or-death judgments, but they are facts of life that have to be dealt with.

I remember a video from Brazil some years back, in which an individual parked his Jeep in his driveway, was attacked by three or more assailants, killed all but one who dove behind a waist-high wall. On the assumption that the final perp was seeking cover but intended to continue the attack, the homeowner went after him and killed him, too.

I think it was considered self-defense in his case, I fear it would not be so in our country.

Unless I am on the Jury!

This happened in Pensacola about 4 years ago. Was big news here at the time. My man Sheriff Chip is a little less agressive than my sheriff Bob in Santa Rosa county who after a break in gone wrong made shooting lessons available for free to the citizenry on 1-3 Saturdays a month. Most Florida sheriff’s don’t F around. The homeowner was not charged due to stand your ground laws in FL.

For any locals, to my. knowledge this occurred within the vicinity of 29 and around where Funari Bro’s is located.

2 of the 4 yutes were caught. Never heard much more after the first news stories.

Ah so. Thanks for pointing that out, ElToro.
So not quite “today’s issue”.
