39th anniversary, looking for a place to spend a few days or as a highlight point on a road trip, we are in Tn ~10 hours away. I think the wife and I would enjoy it but I’m not sure this would this be worth seeing in late Oct or if would it be better saved as a destination for a different time of year. I hear spring is the best time. Thanks Collecting dust.

I would imagine that it had some water issues from Hurricane Flo also.

Weather wise, perfect time of the year. Humidity will have dropped and the weather is damn near perfect. Can’t speak 100% for the gardens however. Probably won’t catch as many things in bloom compared to the spring, but I suspect you’ll still have plenty of color. Florence may have had a small impact on the area, I’m a little further south and all we received was a misty day from the storm.

been there. They some beautiful statuary, which I enjoyed more so than the gardens. You need to wait til the flood waters recede for traveling purposes. Late October should be cleared out I would think, unless we get more hurricanes.

Brookgreen gardens is beautiful year round. Take the creek excursion for an extra few bucks. When you are finished at Brookgreen gardens, drive across the road to Huntington Beach state park. This is a great bird watching site. They have resident alligators hanging out beside the causeway on the way in. October is a great time to visit this part of South Carolina, you will miss out on the summer humidity. Enjoy! "Prepared in mind and resources"

Oh snap! My feeble brain hadn't even thought about the Hurricane. I'll look for an email one their website and inquire about any damage etc. Thanks guys! Glad I asked. Collecting dust.

No idea about hurricane issues, but Mrs.BurtonRW and I visited early last February and spent most of the day wandering around. Beautiful place & worth a visit if you like large gardens (or sculpture). -Rob I predict that there will be many suggestions and statements about the law made here, and some of them will be spectacularly wrong. - jhe888 A=A

They are due for some pretty bad flooding this week. The property is nice. I’d also recommend Atalaya which is just across the street.

So, I emailed them asking about damage / flooding or any issues there would diminish the quality of a visit... and I got an overnight reply. The reply was... "We are open" Then today, on their facebook page... "Due to the ongoing river flooding and concern for our guests' safety, beginning Tuesday, September 25, Brookgreen Gardens will be closed to the public until further notice. Staff will be making daily assessments as circumstances continue to change and we will re-open the Gardens as soon as it is safe to do so" Collecting dust.

Georgetown, the city south of there, was sandbagging the downtown businesses and evacuating as of yesterday. They are expecting flooding. I do not know the relationship between their elevation, proximity to the rivers etc as compared to Myrtle Beach area where the Gardens are located. Could be that that message is more travel related as travel form the west into Myrtle beach area is all but at a standstill. Extra aqua dams have been added to bridges going into Myrtle in attempt to keep a road open.
