"Oakland police, long criticized for using traffic violations to search and interrogate people of color, are trying something new: They’ve dramatically cut back on enforcement.

Officers are declining to pull people over in most cases for low-level infractions like a broken windshield or taillight. They might not even stop motorists for rolling through a stop sign, if no one is crossing the street and the car doesn’t pose an imminent threat to public safety, said police Capt. Christopher Bolton."

I love this quote Big Grin

quote:
Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick touts the approach as innovative and forward-thinking. She knows of no other department in the nation that is deliberately reducing traffic stops, and Eberhardt said the same.

“This is a really big deal in American policing,” Kirkpatrick said on a recent morning.

Hey Oakland Police Chief: How many of those "Racial Bias" victims had an outstanding arrest warrant against them? OR, were driving on a suspended DL.....OR had no vehicle insurance?

Apparently she’s never heard of the “Broken windows” theory.

Either that or her cops have gone to total reactive mode, not doing anything they don’t absolutely have to because they know they have no backup from their brass or city hall and she is announcing it as if it were a policy when it is actually just her street cops trying to protect themselves from lousy leadership.

Most of the cops I know will use just about any excuse to talk to somebody. A lot of times, if everything else is okay, there isn’t even a fix-it ticket, just a simple, “Hey, you oughta get that taken care of, some of the other guys tend to write stuff like this up. Have a good day!”

Good interaction, the citizen will likely get the taillight or whatever fixed, and the officer had a chance to make sure there wasn’t a DUI or other serious thing going on. If there is other stuff going on, there is the chance to deal with it.

If we didn’t have disproportionate criminality, we wouldn’t have disproportionate enforcement...

Bingo! When the savages opt to settle down and try to fit into society, rather than constantly attacking it, the problem will largely go away.

At this point I’m not sure what OPD is actually allowed to do. No traffic stops. No burglary investigations (there’s a form online and an officer might come out within three days and usually at 2am). No report taking (online). I feel for the officers because they get nothing from the brass or the politicians and a portion of the citizenry hates them.

I made more misdemeanor and felony arrests during routine traffic stops than the rest of my squad put together. It can serve as an intelligence tool. For example, putting repeat offenders (burglars or sex offenders) in a neighborhood with high reports of burglaries or sexual assaults, or outstanding warrants. Bad guys use cars and drive badly, to get from one scene to another.

If this crazy chief wants to reduce crime and racial bias, make no arrests and write no reports. The FBI UCR will show Oakland is crime and bias free, yeah right!

Retard would be an understatement.

We called her "Granny Clampette" when that idiot was briefly here.

She came from Seattle, thought she was big shit and was a "street cop". Uuuuhhhh, no, little girl.

She was in the final running for Superintendent of Chgo PD. When Rham went with a local, she cried, threatening to sue because of some sort of bias, so Rahm hires her as a deputy chief.... Then thankfully she got the spot in Oakland.

I feel bad for the Cops in Oakland. This twat WILL fuck up a one car funeral.

She’s gotten the heave ho from at least a couple places. Apparently she sells herself well but it takes actual competence to keep a job and she’s a bit lacking in that regard.

Article conveniently neglects to mention what percentage of crime each race is responsible for, specifically violent crimes, and how enforcement might be influenced by that...

i Used minor traffic violations to get cars stopped and occupants identified...guess what? You can check on warrants then too....ha!

When I got back from my first deployment I got transferred to the shitty side of town, my first stop was for a seatbelt, and scored a trifecta...seatbelt, (traffic), warrants, and he had weed in his pocket. My boss was ecstatic because I used all of the tools available to me and I made arrests daily.

After several years the Chief changed and eventually regular cops went into “response” mode and only did what the radio dispatched us to. It was all to keep from being in an IA...I once got wrote up and into an IA for stopping a woman for speeding in a school zone, after the Chief came to roll call and told us to go to work and stop cars....when I wrote that on my response and quoted the Chief it went away, but that’s not the point.

Everywhere the pendulum is swinging toward not doing anything or allowing them to get away from stuff. In twenty years it will start swinging back the other way. But in between, I’m glad my stroke has removed me from the game...cause I’d lose my mind and I’d keep on keeping on.

I also made traffic stops to generate other arrests and a certain level of traffic enforcement was reflected in my performance review.
I wonder how the local courts feel about this as they may be receiving operating money from traffic fines.

There is a simple solution to their "problem", really...

Just do not stop, arrest or prosecute any black people whatsoever in Oakland. That'll solve their "problem".

You pop that line of thought around any metro politican and they'll start claiming it's flawed because it's full of bias and alleged civil rights violations and there's stacks of studies that refute it's effectiveness and, and, and.... It must be true because all these smart people say it's wrong.

Never mind that the communities where it was actually implemented...it worked! Sure, there was departments that were over eager to jump on every, single thing, which was part of the point, however those communities were safe and clean, merchants thrived, which in turn attracted outside businesses and investors to create more businesses ergo, jobs = less crime. Roll Eyes

Oakland is one of many shining examples who have eschewed broken windows policing...they deserve what they vote for.
