I'm recently retired, but the holidays were some of my favorite times to work. When I was single I'd cover shifts for the family guys. At that time I was working for an agency in a middle class city and except for the drunk uncle calls it was generally pretty quiet. The community typically supported us, and a couple people would hold open houses for us and the firefighters/paramedics so we could stop in for a sandwich or a cup of coffee that wasn't poisoned.

When I switched agencies and moved to the wild woods I was a detective assigned to handle all the crimes against children, and each Christmas I'd team up with social workers from Children's Services to deliver care packages up to and including bicycles to kids in a county where considerably more than 50% were below the poverty line. Deep down the parents may have hated us, but the kids went wild, and it was a great time. Sometimes it was heart-breaking, when children would actually be grateful and excited to get a pair of warm socks and a new coat, plus an actual toy.

Personally, I'd like to thank the people I served for the honor and privilege of working the greatest worst job I ever loved.

Took me 20 years to get holidays off. But, I’m off for the holidays.

Thank you. It is appreciated. I had last Christmas and New Year’s off. This year I work both of them. Just the way the schedule worked out.

I am happy one of our guys I work shifts with is back from deployment. Just got back from overseas the other day and is out-processing at Ft. Bliss as we speak. He expects to be back in town on Thursday. I am excited for his kids. They are little and it is awesome he basically walks in on Christmas!!!!

That’ll be the best ever. Home for Christmas & family. Just the best.

Yes stay safe brothers and sisters. I put 21 years in until an injury ended my watch early. Hard to believe I have been retired more years then I put in now. Times have changed, and it’s a total different animal out there now.

Thankfully, we have a phenomenal cook on our watch. We all kicked in a few $ to the Chef. Knowing Bob, it's going to be something out of this world.

We have abysmal numbers as far as manpower, so I think its going to make it easier for me to get my people a "Uniform Adjustment" so they can get home for a minute or two to see their families and at least eat with them instead of me over the next two days.


I'm going to "try" to sneak out of the District and over to my Mothers house for a little while.

I'm working all weekend, so it ought to be a joyous time full of custody disputes and domestics ! We are gonna have a night-shift dinner down in dispatch tonight, though, so long as the radio doesn't get crazy...always a good time if we can make it work.

Christmas Domestics are the BEST...

One of two things will happen... You can say "Guys, it's Christmas... come on..." and they get it together for at least a few hours.

OR...

It ends up as an absolute shitshow with hostages, shots fired and a SWAT callout.

Ok, I'll admit, that woulda been kinda fun .

As it was, it poured rain most of the night, so it kept most of the idiots inside. A couple of overdoses, a couple of drunken domestics, and an unauthorized control of a vehicle were about all we had. Guess they're saving the custody complaints for Sunday...

I lucked out and have my first Christmas Eve/Christmas day off in 8 years. Only good thing about being a Magistrate rather than working in Investigations. Three more years and a wake up.
