I finally got my bike out of storage after 3 years. Time for a new helmet. I’ve mainly used a Shoei GT Air II with the inner dark visor that can be flipped down. However, the RF 1400 fits my head WAY better. So the question is, are y’all doing any tricks that I’m unaware of to quickly switch from tinted visor to clear? Day to night riding? Sunglasses? Two helmets? 10 years to retirement! Just waiting!

I used to wear Arai helmets. There was not a quick way on those then. Plus, i was always concerned about getting caught after sunset without a clear. Life moves pretty fast. My dad's RF1200 had a transition visor. Is that an option on the 1400? He loved it as he's a glasses wearer & did t have to carry 2 visors. The Enemy's gate is down.

Shoeis are very easy to switch visors on. I keep the night time one in my tank bag, wrapped in a sock.

Exactly the same as above! Depending on which bike I always kept a clear visor in a saddle bag or back pack for my Shoei. Foster's, Australian for Bud

I've been riding with a Shoei RF-1400 since Feb '21 when I got my current bike. In my old helmet, I had always ridden with dark tinted visors, but COVID backlogs meant RF-1400 tinted visors were backorderd. I did the longest ride on my current bike over Memorial Day weekend last year. It was a beautiful sunny day so after breakfast I threw on my trusty sunglasses and headed out with my clear visor. I didn't even think about sunscreen, and arrived back home about dinner time. I received the worst sunburn of my life on my nose, and it bled when it peeled . About a week later, both the tinted visors and photochromatic visors arrived in the US. I elected to go with the $210 photochromatic visor and it has been awesome. Works great when I'm riding in the sun, riding a tree lined backroad, etc. It's always tinted or not tinted the perfect amount. No sunburns either. For people carrying a spare clear/tinted visors, they also sell visor bags which is what I used to use with my old helmet. Now, I just use it to store the clear visor that came with my helmet. I have an Arai shaped head which happens to also fit inside of Schuberth very well. Last two helmets were Schuberth, first a C2 and now a C3 Pro. It has a built in dark visor inside, but also has the easiest changing flip up visors I’ve ever used. I ride the dark visor when I know I’m not going to be late and the sun is out. I use the built in if there is a chance I may be out after the sun goes down. I can ride comfortably with the dark visor in overcast but usually choose not to do so. I also have carried the other visor in my backpack because I can switch them out in less than 30 seconds. _________________________ "An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile - hoping it will eat him last” - Winston Churchil

I've got a Shoe Neotech that I like a lot. It has the built in sun shade option. I love that. I found that I still preferred some tint on the outside shield, even at night, which was difficult to source (I ultimately paid way to much to get one from Japan because it isn't legal here, one way mirror). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The trouble with our Liberal friends...is not that they're ignorant, it's just that they know so much that isn't so." I need glasses to see, so clear visor and prescription glasses and sunglasses.

I have the Shoei Neotec II helmet. It does have the inner visor that is easy to use. I've found that it works well in combination with the regular outer visor. I wear the modular as I've not been able to find a full-face helmet that will let me thread my glasses in without damaging them. I'd consider changing to a full-face helmet if I were to be wearing contacts full time (or somehow got perfect vision without correction by some miracle). I'm planning to go to the nearby motorcycle shop when they aren't busy and see about trying on several brands and see if anything else fits me better.

flip-up integral shaded visors are nice. but clear shield with sunglasses below is what I did for a lot of years. Actually out in the desert usually a tinted visor with sunglasses below. It's bright out there. if you get used to the Shoei system you can (with practice) swap visors at a red light; keep one in your tank bag and swap as needed. I’ll look at keeping a clear visor in my backpack in case i find myself out late at night, usually don’t do much riding at night unless it’s coming home from a late movie or something. The neotec isn’t an option as modular helmets are no better than a half face upon impact, for me it’s full face 1 piece of nothing. I like the GT air II with integral sun visor but it rides on the top of my forehead and gives me a headache in short order. The RF1400 just fits perfect. Now to find a spare dark visor in stock 10 years to retirement! Just waiting!

Yes. Typically Oakley or something with straight temples, for ease of putting them on/off with the helmet already on. I did try one with the built-in sun shade. It worked well also. God bless America.

I have an Arai Defiant X. I installed their external flip down visor for sun. Suboptimal, but all they offer. I used to ride clear visor with polarized sunglasses before this. How is the noise (wind noise) on that RF1400? I am needing a quieter hat. ------- Trying to simplify my life...

Arai full face with a clear shield. Because it fits my head. Always have two pair of glasses on the bike, clear and tinted. Located in the right hand glove box. Easily accessible for changing while riding. Set the grip lock to maintain speed and do the switch.

I haven't ridden for many years, but I can tell you that this needs to be priority over the tint of your visor.

I suspect you are selling the helmets with flip up chin bars a little short. I hit a deer at 60 per with an older Schubarth (the ones BMW used to sell years back) and it suffered quite a bit of exterior damage but the dual chin bar locks held. Another friend of mine was in an accident which deposited him on the road quite hard while wearing a Shoei with the single in the center lock and it also held down through the carnage. Are they as good as the one piece shells, possibly not, but unless you are buying a full on motorcycle racing helmet that is required by a sanctioning body they seem to be more than adequate for us mere mortals. If you are only buying a DOT spec helmet and are not a full leather wearing squid that over extends yourself on the street I sincerely doubt you will have an issue with the flip up chin bar helmet. The main thing I see is that you purchase a helmet that fits your head comfortably. If you have a Shoei head buy a Shoei and if an Arai fits you better buy that. I always loved the look of the old Simpson Bandit helmets but they had me in a screaming headache in about a half hour. So again, first buy what fits and then go for features. Eah totally, gonna figure out the visor issue but definitely going with the one that doesn’t give me a headache. 10 years to retirement! Just waiting!

Perhaps I am, but to me it’s a failure point I don’t need. I love the GT Air II but yeah, like you it puts pressure right on the top of my forehead and I cannot wear it for an hour. I’ll be so damn irritated and have a headache. 10 years to retirement! Just waiting!

Maybe I missed something but I don’t understand how you can love a helmet that you can’t wear for an hour (unless maybe whenever you ride your only riding 30 or 45 minutes at a time). I would suggest you find a helmet that fits you and is comfortable that you can wear all day long. Keep the clear visor and then a pair of sunglasses or prescription sunglasses if you need them or whatever. Almost every helmet, especially the high-end ones like you’re looking at, will have grooves or tracks in the padding for glasses to slip in. I use sunglasses with the straight (non-curved) earpieces so there’s no pressure behind the ears. YMMV Icarus flew too close to the sun, but at least he flew.
