My wife has a 2022 Edge with 20k miles. I found out yesterday, it needs a new converter. First one I have had to replace since they started using them.

That's a bummer, probably out of warranty based on time?

I had to replace one on a 2004 Civic, but it was because the manifold had a crack, not because of a bad cat.

Good thing it's under warranty. They are not cheap. The convertor should be covered by the 8 year, 80,000 mile emmision warranty.

That would be a relief for the OP

A Honda Pilot running gas with 10% ethanol kept showing error codes saying the catalytic converter was bad. Switching to non-ethanol gas made the codes go away.

I thought emissions had a 10 year warranty. As long as the OP uses OEM he will be fine, aftermarket never seem to work out.

Catalytic converters have at least an 8/80 warranty. At 20k, this is very unusual. Always check for some underlying problem. Or ... it might just be a POS.

I have 10 times this mileage and mine still works.

OP, please ask "what leads you to this diagnosis?"

The O2 sensors on either inlet or outlet of the converter can create a misdiagnosis.

If the vehicle is running so rich or so lean that the converter is plugged or melted, how does replacing the converter fix the real problem?

The Ford dealer service dept says it is bad.

Time to get a second opinion, unless you don't mind paying for it. As mentioned above, it is covered under warranty.

I've had to replace two.

One on a '95 Dodge Dakota. It started rattling. Apparently, it came loose inside its housing. I had a garage replace it, so it must have been out of warranty.

The other one was my 2013 Toyota Tacoma. That one was recalled by the factory when the truck was only a couple of years old, so Toyota picked up the tab that time.

I bought an old truck that had no exhaust at all, only headers.

Was able to get the cats for both sides for about three hundred bucks.

Hopefully the prices have come down for everybody and it won't set you back much.

I've had to replace 1 and it was a '98 Dakota with the magnum V6. I had just started a 90 mile drive for work, transferred freeways and it wouldn't accelerate above 35 mph no matter how much gas I gave it. Exited and limped over to the Dodge dealer. On what grounds? Money light on with codes P0420 or P0430 (or both)? This is when the cats don't combust properly, monitored by comparing the readings from the oxygen sensors before and after it. This may or may not be accompanied by other issues. Or did it/they break apart inside or melt down? That happens when a cylinder has a dead miss or the engine is running seriously rich, either of which pours more fuel down it/them than it/they can handle. That condition, if it exists, must be fixed, and first.

YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED TO HAVE THIS FIXED!!!!!! Fumes will get in the cabin and carbon monoxide poisoning is a possibility.


This is a very common problem with the Edge and Explorers.
The Catalytic Converter still works however welds have broken allowing the exhaust to leak and they replace the entire thing with a what they claim is a better stronger design that will not crack.
However, many many people have them crack repeatedly.

The catalytic converter is still working and doing its job it’s just the welds have cracked allowing fumes out.
So a better way to put it is the Catalytic Converter tubing is bad.

I may be out of date but at one time Emissions equipment was required to have a 10 year service life and any failures under this deadline required a free replacement by the manufacturer. This requirement specifically named Catalytic Converters as one of the items covered by this law.

Take it to your nearest Ford Dealer and ask for a Warranty replacement. Because there is no way that should have failed this early.

BTW just googled "EPA Service Life for Catalytic converters" and got this result

If they try and tell you that you have to pay for the R&R then tell the dealer that you will report them to the EPA for violating that Emissions Warranty. The cost for this is 100% on Ford, no if's and's or but's about it.

I got the car back today and the code was P0420.

There was no charge to me, everything was warranty.
