I have always had an American flag hanging out side any houses I have owned.
Several weeks ago I installed a ring camera looking out over my driveway to the left and above my flag.
No mater what I did to the settings on the camera every time the flag moved even slightly the camera would start recording, so I took the flag down temporary.
I have a big oak tree in my front yard that is light at night and was thinking I could hang the flag on the tree.
Is this proper?

Not sure on proper, but have seen it a lot around here. Most just use a post mount & screw it into the tree .

I see plenty of flags mounted on trees in my neighborhood. I don’t know if the screws hurt the tree. I have a large oak I’d like to put a flag on. Just need to find a good flag pole for it. The ones I’ve bought at box stores always break in strong wind.

These go to eleven.

I posted a thread last year about losing a few plastic mounts to wind, there were some good HD options for flag mounts in there.

If you leave it long enough, the bracket will be buried in the tree.

I never quite understand the question of ‘proper’ for displaying the flag. It’s your flag on your private property, not on your uniform. I say the first amendment says you can hang it however you like. I think your intent (tasteful and positive) will show. If it has a big, horizontal branch, a vertical orientation would look nice, but it really depends on how the tree is shaped.

Sure. You could attach a 45* pole mount to the tree and display the flag on the pole, hang the flag from a suitable 45* or horizontal branch, or even hang the flag vertically from the tree using a banner hanger.

As far as screws/hardware damaging the tree -

Unless you do MAJOR damage to the bark, like all the way around the tree, you are not going to affect the life of the tree.

There is a process called “girdling” the tree that will kill it. This involves taking a band of bark, say a foot wide and all the way around, off the tree.

A few screws, even heavier lag screws, will typically not kill a tree. It is possible though, as mentioned by MNSIG, for the tree to eventually grow over the hardware and even enclose the metal within the tree. This can be very hard on a chainsaw….

I know you are speaking of an OAK. A tree which would be damages by this would be a palm....they are not self healing.

Cheers

The Ring camera doesn’t have the ability to “mask” out the flag?

I work with security cameras for a living and they all should have the ability to ignore a designated area so it doesn’t trigger motion recording.

I would not want the precious flag to be in a tree, where squirrels and birds and bugs reside.

Work with the camera controls.

I tried to limit the activation zone but the camera still picks up the movement. It also has a mode to only activate for people but it still starts recording whenever a car drives by.

Had the same issue with our Ring at put old house. Ended up moving the flag to the garage & mounting in brick.
No more ring false alarms & was more sturdy in the brick, than the wood veneer by the front door.

As far as being proper, as long as the guidelines in the Flag Code are followed, I don't think it matters what the Flag is mounted on.

My official size Flag is on an 8' 45° pole on my garage. I did have to have a few tree branches lopped off to avoid tangling.
