So far no confirmation he was a teenager, a mutant, or a turtle.

I've been there lots of times, it sounds like he tried to use the public entrance, which has metal detectors and is usually staffed with two bailiffs.

The link includes a video with an eyewitness interview. I did not see any shots of the ninja.

Witness says man dressed like "ninja" ran toward the Scott County Courthouse

Davenport, Iowa - An officer-involved shooting Wednesday morning outside of the Scott County Courthouse after a witness described seeing a man dressed like a "ninja" run toward the entrance.

According to the Scott County Sheriff's Office, it happened around 9:30 a.m.

They said two bailiffs and a Davenport Police Officer inside confronted the suspect carrying a blunt object.

The witness said it looked like a stick.

According to officials, it escalated, and the bailiffs and officer deployed a less lethal device and the firearm discharged by a bailiff.

The then chased the suspect and took him into custody at West 6th Street and Western Avenue.

A bailiff and suspect were taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries and evaluation.

The investigation is being handed over to the Division of Criminal Investigation with help from the Davenport Police Department.

Officials said the bailiff who fired the gun had been placed on administrative leave, as is policy, waiting for the results of the investigation.

Witness Ann St. Clair said, "I was scared to death, I could just pushed my way into [the building] as fast as we could, we got in here."

It wasn't the welcome Ann St. Clair was expecting as she and her daughter crossed the threshold of the Scott County Courthouse.

St. Clair said, "Seen this guy coming from across the street and I swear, he was dressed like a ninja in all white."

St. Clair said her and her daughter took shelter behind deputies inside, after seeing him come toward the entrance carrying what she says looked like a stick on his back.

St. Clair said, "He's standing there holding the doors open, going come on G. I don't know if he was talking to us or talking to the police officers."

From there, St. Clair said she saw the man run off into the parking lot and out of sight with the officer and bailiffs chasing after.
But it also made for an unusual drive into work for the owner of Cafe d'Marie.

Witness Deanna Walter said, "A gentleman with a very long stick, just kind of swirling it around."

Deanna Walter said as she was pulling into work that's when she saw the individual again, with bailiffs on his heels heading toward the Gold Coast neighborhood.

Walter said, "Running up behind him on Western, coming up to 6th Street, so it was a different experience."

For Walter, this isn't giving her much concern about being in the area, saying this is the first time she's seen anything like this in the neighborhood.

Walter said, "They had everything under control, so I feel it's once in 15 years I've seen it."

Prosecutor: bailiff's use of force 'reasonable' during incident at Scott County courthouse

Scott County Attorney Mike Walton has determined that a Scott County bailiff's discharge of his weapon was reasonable during an incident with a pole-wielding man that began at the courthouse.

"He (Tim Hutcheson) believed his force was necessary to avoid injury or risk to his life or safety, or the life or safety of others," Walton said in a media release Thursday.

The man involved in the incident, Adam Demarcus Lafrentz, 29, of Davenport, has been charged with interference with official acts, assault causing bodily injury and assault on a police officer, all misdemeanors.

Lafrentz was not in the Scott County Jail Thursday. Records show that two warrants were issued for his arrest on April 26. They were recalled Monday.

Walton said in the media release that "further pursuit of criminal charges has been deferred while mental health alternatives are explored for Lafrentz."

He declined further comment.

According to Walton's summary of the incident:

About 9:30 a.m. April 25, Scott County Courthouse security was advised that an individual was assaulting a person with what appeared to be a pole of some kind.

Bailiffs responded and encountered Lafrentz, who was holding two poles.

They approached Lafrentz and tried to talk to him; Lafrentz was speaking loudly and acting aggressively.

During the conversation Lafrentz struck Hutcheson in the face with one of the poles.

Upon being struck, Hutcheson fired one shot from his handgun at Lafrentz. No one was hit by the gunshot.

Another bailiff shot Lafrentz with a stun gun, however, he ran away, detaching the stun gun probes.

Davenport Police officers were also on scene.

Lafrentz ran from officers and did not comply with commands to stop. He eventually was apprehended in the area of Warren and 6th streets.

After being taken into custody and handcuffed, Lafrentz assaulted a Davenport police officer.

Lafrentz was taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

Investigators determine that the pole was a wooden stick wrapped in electrical tape.

The person who was originally assaulted was hit in the arm and hip with the pole and suffered swelling and pain, according to Walton's summary of the incident.

"When he was struck in the face, Hutcheson did not know what the object was, what its immediate effect on him would be, or whether he and the bailiff with him were in danger of a further, possibly deadly, assault," Walton said in the media release.

Hutcheson was placed on paid administrative leave following the incident, per department protocol. His job status was not immediately known Thursday.

The shooting was investigated by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
