Wasps in my side mirror, help me get them out!
Hey boys,

My Honda has been sitting idle for a few months. In that time, some wasps have taken up residence in my driver side mirror.

How can I deal with this? I would just use wasp spray, but I'm afraid I might damage the motors inside the housing with it. It's cold enough now that the wasps appear to be dormant.

Thanks!

Soapy water kills them- wash your car!

Depending on how nasty the wasps are I might just blast them with wasp spray and worry about replacing the motors as needed after the buggers are DEAD. Seem safer than nuking them from space or killing them with fire. Wink

After it gets dark...quickly wrap the mirror and housing with a plastic bag and seal it with tape as close to the side window so they can't escape...then cut a small slit or hole in the bag and use a few short blasts from a can of yard insect fogger to "gas" the bag. They won't last long...this is what my uncle did on his 4Runner's power mirrors after red wasps set up house keeping.

You could use wd-40, will kill the wasps, but shouldn't hurt the motors.

Take it for a drive at highway speeds.

I like Bisleyblackhawk's idea.

Drive to the local car wash and use the water pressure to flush them out from the housing. Most won't make it out and the ones that do will hive up at the car wash and not be near your yard.

This would also not have any chemicals to gum up the motors/actuators for your mirrors or turn your clear coat hazy.

If that doesn't work, sell it at a car lot. If the salesman doesn't give you what you want for the car, be sure to slam the door hard as you are driving off. Big Grin

Burn the car and throw it into a quarry or drive it into a deep lake!

Treat them at night with a quick blast from any insect fogger with a straw tip applicator. No need to enclose it or tape it up. To make the aerosol more fine, warm the can up under hot water for a minute or so( makes the particles smaller and less likely to foul). A quick 2-3 second blast should fix it without messing with the mirrors.

I wasn’t joking about the soapy water. It really does kill wasps. Not carcinogenic or destructive like the other suggestions:

True, soap and water basically drowns them. Works well when you can see the entire nest or when you have wasps inside your house and don't want to release aerosol inside. Might be a little tough to adequately smother them behind a mirror and may take multiple attempts.

Brake cleaner, starting fluid, mineral spirits, lacquer thinner, any petroleum distillate really. I prefer something in a can under pressure. Get them in the morning when they are slow. Coupla squirtz and voila! Problem solved.

When that happened I went to the self-serve car wash and used the high pressure hose to just blast the crud out of them inside there.

This summer I had wasps in both mirrors. Tried wasp spray and hose with reducer. Some success but they quickly returned.

Son-n-law borrowed my car for a trip for a few days and returned it without wasps. Guess the got sucked out at highway speeds Smile

Brake Cleaner will kill just about anything. Of course, the use for anything other than break cleaning may be against the law, but who is asking...

BTW, spiders die quickly when hit with Brake Cleaner too... Smile
