I sent my mom a birthday card. It was clearly a card but nothing was in it. I taped the flap anyhow to avoid any "accidents." Someone meticulously picked the middle of the edge of the envelope away so they could check for something of value inside. It was deposited in a box at one post office by me and delivered at her house that way. To me it seems like a clear theft attempt.

I tried that postal inspector site but kept getting redirected.

Anyone get anywhere reporting something like this?

This something you will be wasting your time and energy on, and it will be getting nowhere.

The USPS doesn’t have time for this.

I learned this when a USPS employee stole magazines out of a box shipped to another member.

I had someone (most likely a neighbor) who was constantly stealing my Netflix movies from my mailbox. At the time, maybe 6-7 years ago, I was given a number to call and report it. Nothing ever came of it, not even a follow up.

Having time is not the issue. Having the interest and the desire is the issue. "We don't give a shit" is the "don't have the time" scenario. The postal service is an out of control "run a muck" operation. Plain and simple. Even our once well run PO has gone done the shitter. Oh, and let's not even discuss the highway robbery that goes on in one. It is a shame.

I really didn't expect anything to come of it directly, like most here. I thought if the complaint pile got big enough, perhaps one day someone might take an interest.

I'm pretty sure their complaint pile already surpassed Mt Everest. So, that "one day" you hope for is just a dream.

Recently got my "Birthday" card from my parents. Envelope was open and the card in it was a Valentines card for a daughter. (We do have a Subaru but I haven't taken it that far)
Checked with Mom thinking she may have mixed up cards with my sisters Bday card (5 days before mine).
The enclosed check had moms cell phone # so she eventually got contacted by someone who got my card and check. They were here in Vegas somewhere.
All kind of weird. Envelope had been sealed but must have came loose. You could see where it had adhered previously.

I caught a substitute mailman leaving his piss bottle in the street in front of my and my neighbors house. I took the full bottle of piss down to the PO and the tracking number of the package he delivered and spoke with the supervisor. I'm certain they did nothing. My expectations would be very low and I wouldn't waste the time on it.

Look at their metrics on the subject.

They deliver X millions of pieces of mail per day by XX thousand carriers.

If they only receive one complaint on a given carrier on a given day - the numbers look forever in that carrier's favor.

Anything less than 10 grand isn't going to get much of a response.

They arrested a carrier here a few weeks back. He got got into it with a homeowner then went back to the guys house, walked inside, and threatened him. Wild stuff.

An envelope I mailed was opened, resealed with tape, and there was a heavy clear thumbprint on the inside sticky surface of the tape. $7 was missing.

It still was not investigated.

Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope with Signature Confirmation and Insurance, sealed with nylon-embedded tape ... That might get there unopened.

I mail stuff. $501 insurance gets you free Signature Confirmation. Insurance + Signature seems to make sure the package is handled a little more carefully. Even if it is only worth $150.

It was like teaching a line of cats to mambo, but I finally got mom to stop mailing cash. Like an old-timer told me thirty years ago, "There's strange things going on lately". The old timers know how to steal.

Word of advice: A GREEN holiday envelope is noted for having cash. Want your gift to disappear? Send it naked. Instead of in a manila envelope.
