Anybody been to New Orleans?
I'll be there in February for a conference.

Great food and great music can be found all over.

As msfzoe stated, "Maintain situational awareness at all times."

These I found worthy: Po' Boys, horse-drawn carriage tour of Garden District, the cemetery and coffee with beignets.

Lived there for 4 years from 1967 to 1971. All I remember is heat, humidity, and strippers on Bourbon Street.

Edit to add:

Be sure to eat a muffaletta and a po-boy while there. The muffaletta sandwich is a NOLA thing. Take one with you on your return flight; it travels well.

It was a shit hole when I went there in 94, it was a shithole when I was there for the oil spill, and several other times, and I'm sure it's still a shithole now...there were nice places to go-ask a local...

just skip Bourbon...you can go get drunk anywhere; and it always smells like piss...

(I've been all over the world and seen shitholes-trust me, NO ranks up there with the best)

On the off chance that the info about New Orleans is still useful, I will share this which I got on the Dixieland Jazz mail reflector, responding to an inquiry about venues for a Monday-Tuesday visit.

quote:
Here are the URL’s of some music venues which have schedules posted.

The Palm Court Jazz Cafe is not listed because they are dark on Monday and Tuesday.

Snug Harbor and Buffa’s have restaurant service, the Maison has short orders. The Royal Sonesta is a full service hotel.

There are several other locations with music, but don’t bother with Bourbon Street, except Fritzel’s. The saloons on Bourbon Street have figured out they can make more money by replacing competent jazz musicians with three cheap Japanese wind-up toy monkeys banging on cymbals and tambourines and catering to the torn blue jean crowd.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown
