Anybody been to New Orleans?

I was there but it was probably 20 years ago before Katrina wiped it out. Bourbon street was interesting to see and spend a day, but I wouldn't spend any more than that on it, unless you like drinking, bad strippers, and cheesy souvenir shops.

Lots of historical things to go see and check out, lots of great food.

Meh.

Like Las Vegas, if you have diminished moral standards, it may be worth a visit. Otherwise, there's nothing to recommend it.

I was not impressed with New Orleans. Bourbon street was cool for a while but I couldn't get into it for more than one night. Plus the overwhelming smell of piss was a little disturbing. I guess I was too sober.

Some of the food is EXCELLENT and worth a visit to some local restaurants. Other than the food I can find no reason to visit NO again.

New Orleans has plenty to offer besides Bourbon Street. There are phenomenal food options and tons of history to explore. The WWII museum, the garden district and the sculpture garden at City Park just to name a few. Don't listen to the nah sayers, it can be a beautiful city full of welcoming people if you get off the tourist track.

Spent two days there on a business trip 6 months before Katrina. Stayed in hotel 2 blocks from Bourbon Street (don't remember the name of hotel). Didn't have a vehicle so only walked to Bourbon Street to view the sights.

Still some good restaurants, but they're not inexpensive.

Walk around French Quarter to see architecture, shops and churches, WW2 museum, NOMA - New Orleans Museum of Art, cemetery tours, restaurants, night life, coffee and beignets at Café du Monde (get there early - long lines), jazz music, trolley rides ...

There is some real good Dixieland there, and lots of not so good.

Preservation Hall is one. Tim Laughlin often found at the Palm Court Jazz Cafe is really, really good, often with Connie Jones.

Tuba Skinny is not bad, a different style of trad to be sure.

This ^^^^^. I lived there for a while, and it is still one of my favorite cities......but I love the South and it's food and people.

N.O. was a filthy place before Katrina. After? Couldn't tell you and I'm not interested in finding out. Quite frankly, I'm of the opinion that we should have ceded control of N.O. to the Gulf of Mexico in 2005.

Drink close to the room.

I've bicycled the city for close to a total of ten weeks. All before Katrina. My skills lie in doing nothing on vacation and enjoying it.

Couldn't agree more. The last time I was there was after Katrina, I remember the sign the State Police had up saying that N.O. was closed. Everyday I would say why not change that sign to "Fill Dirt Wanted". Either bury it or give it to the gulf.

The quarter, and especially Bourbon St. is a waste of time. It's tourist. It's not representative of the city.

We passed through once while on a road trip for the sole purpose of driving across the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. Worlds longest continuous bridge over water at ~38 miles.

Been a while since I've been there (before Katrina), but this was my take. Some phenomenal restaurants and not much else. (But, I was never there over weekends and did not get to explore the music scene.)
